Microsoft Released A New Website to Help Teachers Use Minecraft in Their Classes ~ EdTech & MLearning

Microsoft Released A New Website to Help Teachers Use Minecraft in Their Classes ~ EdTech & MLearning | iPads in EducationLB | Scoop.it
‘Minecraft in education is a way to teach, learn and inspire. It’s students visiting ancient civilizations to create and play out their own stories. It’s exploring mathematical concepts like perimeter, area, and volume by breaking and placing Minecraft blocks. It’s practising collaboration, problem solving, digital citizenship, and leadership skills through creative thinking and innovative design. Minecraft in education is teachers and students inspiring each other to change the way we learn.’

Sue Gaardboe's curator insight, July 19, 2015 6:25 AM

Any way of making a link between what students really do and the maths we want them to learn is a bonus.  Too often a 'real-life' maths problem has little or no relevance to the students' lives.

Code and programming may not be the most important topics on the planet but it is an area of study that sufferers two major problems. one: an industry with millions of unfilled job positions and two: a world where not enough teachers feel confident to run programming projects. The iPad can offer a solution in these situations.

Check out this AWESOME #Maker #Education site! Thank You @jackiegerstein | iPads in EducationLB | Scoop.it
The Maker Movement is a technological and creative revolution underway around the world. Fortunately for educators, the Maker Movement overlaps with the natural inclinations of children and the power of learning by doing. Embracing the lessons of the Maker Movement holds the keys to reanimating the best, but oft-forgotten learner-centered teaching practices. New tools and technology, such as 3D printing, robotics, microprocessors, wearable computing, e-textiles, “smart” materials, and new programming languages are being invented at an unprecedented pace. The Maker Movement creates affordable — even free — versions of these inventions, and shares tools and ideas online, creating a vibrant, collaborative community of global problem-solvers.

4 Best Apps for Sharing Large Files Instantly - MakeUseOf.com

4 Best Apps for Sharing Large Files Instantly - MakeUseOf.com | iPads in EducationLB | Scoop.it
We’ve all been there. You’ve spent hours curating a document, editing a video, or photoshopping an image, only to be told the file is too large to send as an attachment via email. Of course, if you want to share the file locally, you can easily load it onto a flash drive — but what about if you need to send it to a friend or colleague on the other side of the world?

It used to be a nightmare scenario, and although web-based file transfer services started to become popular in the tail-end of the last decade, they were still slow, cumbersome, and frequently failed. Thankfully, the advent of smartphones has helped streamline the process, and there are now a plethora of apps that let you share large files directly from your Android device.

Here we look at the best options for you."

Lack of Tech PD Isn’t the Problem

Lack of Tech PD Isn’t the Problem | iPads in EducationLB | Scoop.it
It happens all the time: we put technology into a classroom, things don’t go as planned, and we blame the technology. That must be it, right? Not necessarily. At what point does it stop being a technology problem and start becoming a classroom management problem.

Teaching strategies from 20, 10, even 5 years ago may no longer work. Our students are different, our strategies must change in response. If you take a room with poor classroom management and introduce an educationally disruptive and potentially addictive device, what do you expect to happen? Of course it won’t go well. But that’s not a technology problem, and because of that all the technology PD in the world won’t fix it.

So what do we do?

We need administrators (evaluators) to help out. They need to work with teachers to refine their classroom management skills. If teachers struggle with teaching reading or math we know how to have those difficult conversations about improving. But too often we seem to look the other way when it comes to classroom management, even though it transcends every lesson we teach! We say to ourselves, “everyone is different,” “everyone has their own style.” Yes, that’s true, but some styles are ineffective. And those styles need to change. We’re not doing our students any favors by overlooking these rooms

Assuming you have no use for the old backups anymore, you can easily delete them from iCloud and free up some iCloud space this way.

Why iPads are magic and why that may (not) matter - Teaching with iPad

Why iPads are magic and why that may (not) matter - Teaching with iPad | iPads in EducationLB | Scoop.it
The following is a guest post from colleague Dr. Guy Trainin, a professor of Literacy at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Trainin is a very avid YouTube author with very helpful iPad videos.

A few weeks ago I created two of my favorite episodes on me podcast iPads in the Classroom. One was about viruses and cells and the second was about the future of the book. (The videos are embedded below). These episodes show off the magic that iPads can create. This is not just a book splashed on a page, or games that drill a basic math skill. Instead, these are apps that show how much more can you get when you use a mobile devices to get a different kind of information.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, May 11, 2015 6:25 AM

Are you looking for resources that provide "copyright friendly" images, audio and video for your learners? This post, by Richard Byrne, provides six resources. Each one provides access to materials that are in the public domain.

* The Moving Image Archive. This is part of the Internet Archive and includes over 1.7 million clips.

* The Public Domain Review is a project of the Open Knowledge Foundation and provides access to images, books, films, audio recording and essays.

* The Free Music Archive (FMA) provides access to free music. This collection is curated and provides a range of genres.

* Sound Gator provides free sound effects. Do you need the sound of a horn honking, or whipped cream coming out of a can?  This is a great place to go.

* Pixabay and the Morgue File are both great places to search for images. The Morgue File is a collection of photos, and Pixabay provides high-resolution images in the public domain.

Byrne provides additional details on each of these six resources in the post. Click through to learn more.
