Has BYOD changed the way you hire? Here are some things to consider | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"BYOD: A workplace phenomenon that makes processes easier, streamlines communication, and helps to connect employees around the globe. Short for Bring Your Own Device, the movement means employees can use their own digital tools, like laptops and smartphones, instead of the ones that are provided (or not provided) for them by an employer"

Learning by Making is More Humane - MAKE

Learning by Making is More Humane - MAKE | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Human beings learn in lots of different ways. They can learn by reading a book or by sitting in a classroom or by taking an online class. Some ways of learning are more tedious and stressful than others, though. When I was an engineering student in college, I sat in lectures for nine hours straight on Wednesdays, with no lunch break. After those nine hours of lectures, I’d study several hours to prepare for the next day. Is it any wonder I ditched engineering as my college major? There’s got to be a more humane way of learning. Learning by making is that more humane way."

Social Media as a teaching tool: How to Tweet your students some knowledge - teachingwithipad.org | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"As teachers, the pull of social media on your students attention will already be well known to you. The online world exerts a magnetic lure on the attention of young people today, offering community and information sharing, entertainment and gossip in ways that often pull students away from the blackboard. Understanding this dynamic, some educators are now bringing social media into the classroom in surprising ways. By working with something your students already enjoy and don’t, perhaps, associate with learning, there are opportunities for creative teaching, as well as making genuine connection with your students."

Word Wizard Helps Students Sound-out and Spell New Words - iPad Apps for Schools

Word Wizard Helps Students Sound-out and Spell New Words - iPad Apps for Schools | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Word Wizard is an iPad app that elementary school students can use to learn the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, sound-out words, and spell new words. The app has two primary modes to it. In the “Movable Alphabet” mode students can drag and drop letters on a board to try to create words. In Movable Alphabet mode each time a student touches a letter the narrator makes the sound of that letter. If a student combines letters, the narrator will make the sound of that letter combination. That pattern continues until a word has been created."

Don’t use technology.… Do use technology.… - Mark Anderson's Blog

Don’t use technology.… Do use technology.… - Mark Anderson's Blog | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Don’t get me wrong – given my Twitter ID it’s a given that I believe very strongly in using technology to support and enhance learning. The OED states that an evangelist is “a person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith, especially by public preaching”, so ok… I might not be doing the Christian faith bit, but as an ‘ICT Evangelist’ I do believe that technology has the power to change our world and certainly the learning that takes place in our classrooms and beyond.

There’s a problem though. There is a dichotomy of experiences, skills, beliefs and abilities when it comes to using technology in our classrooms. It’s written in to the United States Declaration of Independence that, “all men are born equal”, but it’s certainly not true when it comes to the experiences that our students receive in their lessons at the hands of some of our teachers and that’s before you even think about entering technology into the equation."

Gunnar Sewell's curator insight, January 25, 2014 7:56 AM

While tablets such as the iPad can be a very useful tool for teachers and for student engagement, it is my strong belief that they should never replace or reduce interpersonal activities. Educators must always remember that the push to use technology in the classroom is mainly the result of high tech companies' marketing campaigns.

Susan Berkowitz's curator insight, January 25, 2014 6:31 PM

teachers often underestimate or underuse the power of the iPad

Terry Doherty's curator insight, January 27, 2014 5:45 PM

Interesting perspective ... will engaging kids in elementary school translate to the stronger writing we expect of students.

iOS Security Essential: Enabling the iPhone / iPad Passcode - OSXDaily

iOS Security Essential: Enabling the iPhone / iPad Passcode - OSXDaily | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Virtually all iPhone and iPad users should set an iOS passcode for their individual devices. This forces anyone attempting to use the device to enter a password before being able to unlock it or gain access to anything on the device, and it also requires the same passcode before any user is able to make adjustments to certain system preferences. Setting a device access code is very simple, and unless an iOS device never leaves home, work, or school, or doesn’t have any personal data on it, it should be considered an easy yet essential security tip for all users to safeguard their devices and data."

Austin Randall's curator insight, January 23, 2014 11:43 PM

People should definitely set passcodes on their devices! There is no reason not to and it will guaruntee protection, especially if one of your devices was stolen etc.

Being able to use meaningful educational apps in the classroom can be a beneficial tool for students and teachers alike. We need to incorporate new media literacy skills into the 21st century classroom! I am curious to see just how much we can simplify the process so that any teacher can realize his or her vision for an educational app.

Richard Whiteside's curator insight, January 29, 2014 6:56 AM

This could be nice to plan or summarise a story, for reading or listening comprehension with students. Or for reviewing the stages of a task, or process (perhaps a process, for passive grammar). In teacher training it could be an option for self-observation, reviewing the stages of a lesson and how it went.
