A 1:1 iPad Menu For Guided Reading - te@chthought | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Choice boards are powerful tools for providing students with both choice and direction in their work.

The idea, creatively shown below from teacher/blogger Monica Evon in the form of a menu, allows teachers to guide students towards certain forms of academic practice, or demonstration of specific standards. If, for example, you want students to show they understand how to calculate the area of a circle from real-life applications, you can create 8 different ways for them to show it."

Digital learning - transforming the relationship between the learner & their learning spaces

Digital learning - transforming the relationship between the learner & their learning spaces | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"When we made the decision to equip our students with iPads, either for class use for our younger users or 1:1 for students in the senior school and sixth form, we knew we were unlocking a host of opportunities. Some were easily identified, others have gradually revealed themselves through an iterative process. An illustrative list in no order of priority includes the benefits of instant access to the Internet without the hassle of booking IT rooms; enriched digital communication; a range of handy apps; a virtual multimedia studio; and the creation of our own iBooks and iTunesU resources tailored to the learning needs of our students. What we did not perhaps appreciate was the impact digital devices could have on the physical learning environment."

Mike Gunn - Failing to Learn Better: Technology tools that support new teachers | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Being a new teacher can be daunting. To be honest, even when you've taught for many years, a move to a new school can make you feel almost entirely like a beginner again. The nature of teacher is that students listen when they respect you, and rarely before that point. Your job as the teacher is to establish high expectations, behaviour boundaries, and what I used to call "the deal": "You guys work hard, and I'll make your learning worthwhile and engaging"."

Very useful for fieldtrips and site -based learning activities - the app allows you to record the location, a map, a photo and notes about the location in a single "postcard" style image.  Geological survey, environmental outings, etc could all be recorded with this innovative, yet very simple application.

STEM Needs to Be Updated to STREAM - HUFF POST Education

STEM Needs to Be Updated to STREAM - HUFF POST Education | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"In 2006 there was a term that started to grow in the United States-- STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The basis of the STEM movement was the growing concern that our students were not prepared for the high-tech jobs of the future. Just a year later a well-know researcher, Georgette Yakman, announced the need to include the arts in STEM programs; thus STEM became STEAM. Georgette took the inclusion of the arts and expanded on how it relates to the other STEM subjects. Her well-know quote is "Science and technology, interpreted through engineering and the arts, all based in elements of mathematics." This is a rich beginning to our dive into the 21st century job market... but!

We have lost sight of one very important aspect of our education and all jobs, be they high-tech, low-tech, or no-tech. What about the importance of reading? Without the ability to read and write, there is not a job to be found for which STEM or STEAM education is going to be enough preparation.

ELA, or English Language Arts, is a critical component of the core standards. There are also standards that help reference reading and writing for science and the technical subjects. The notion seems to be that reading is still a critical element in any student's success. Why not give it its proper place... STEM to STEAM to STREAM, standing for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Math."

These Are the Apps and Devices That Are Transforming Special-Ed Classrooms - Slate.com | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Eleven-year-old Matthew Votto sits at an iPad, his teacher at his elbow. She holds up a small laminated picture of a $20 bill.

“What money is this?” she asks. Matthew looks at the iPad, touches a square marked “Money Identification,” and then presses “$20.” “Twenty,” the tablet intones, while the teacher, Edwina Rogers, puts another sticker on a pad, bringing Matthew closer to a reward.

They race through more questions. “What day of the week is it?” “What is the weather outside?” “What money is this?” In most cases Matthew, who has autism, answers verbally, but he is quicker and seems more comfortable on the device."

"In a few short years, the iPad has gone from geeky luxury item to a ubiquitous, incredibly popular device -- and that's especially true with the fickle, frantic audience we call "the kids." Little hands love Apple's portable, touchable tablet... maybe a little bit too much. Parents and educators may be wondering if all this tablet time is the best way to engage and entertain young minds that learn most effectively by engaging with the physical world along with the virtual one."
