Ramblings of a Modern Learner: Learning to Sketchnote

Ramblings of a Modern Learner: Learning to Sketchnote | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"This summer, I was introduced to sketchnoting and challenged to incorporate  the concept of sketchnoting as a means of note taking.  Sketchnoting is the process of creating a personal visual story while listening, reading, or recording an experience as it happens or on a later date.

Sketchnoting brings in a variety of cognitive processes, increasing the connection between speaker and listener due to the engagement needed to listen intently while synthesizing the spoken word into drawings and short narratives.  I decided to to take the challenge seriously."

Apple and accessibility: Helping students with dyslexia - iMore

Apple and accessibility: Helping students with dyslexia - iMore | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Can you imagine not being able to read printed words? What would your life be like if books, newspapers, websites, email, and even signs were all virtually incomprehensible to you? How would you get through the day? For up to one in five people like me with dyslexia these are not hypothetical questions, they are our reality. Yet, thanks to accessibility technologies built into Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Mac, it's a reality that can be challenged.

Dyslexia makes reading a simple paragraph, let alone textbooks, a tedious and frustrating process. Spelling and written expression can also be very difficult.    Despite this, dyslexia does not impact intellectual ability. It doesn't cause people to read backwards or see words upside down. It does, however, make figuring out what sounds go with which letters difficult. Deciphering unfamiliar words on a page can be extremely difficult, if not impossible.  So what do people who have dyslexia do when they encounter printed text? Some simply avoid it or give up. Others find methods to help them succeed."

Learn The Basics Of Any Instrument With YouTube [Stuff to Watch] - MakeUseOf | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Music is creative, enjoyable and an excellent means of expressing oneself. Even better: playing an instrument is one of the best workouts you can give your brain. Even if you don’t intend on pursuing a career in music or starting a band, you only need to know the basics of an instrument to enjoy it.

YouTube can teach you to do just about anything, and that includes playing an instrument. Today we’ll focus on piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums, but if you look hard enough you’ll find crash courses in everything from the bassoon to the melodica."

It's Time to End the Device Debate - Edudemic

It's Time to End the Device Debate - Edudemic | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Tim, a Director of Instructional Technology from El Paso, Texas, gives a strong account of how iPad can be used as a tool for creation. He clearly details some of the concrete ways that the often-defended tablet can be used to produce videos, music, drawings, and works of art that move well beyond consumption. Kim, on the other hand, offers a unique perspective as an educator who has recently transitioned from supporting an iPad environment to using a Chromebook as his primary device. In his post, 3 Reasons Why Chromebook Beats iPad in 1:1 Programs, Kim gives the following three reasons for the superiority of the Chromebook:

Chromebooks are for creating, and iPads are for consumingThe App vs the WebThe Google Ecosystem for Collaboration

The most viable of these three reasons from Kim is the final one, the collaborative tools that are inherent in the Google ecosystem can be accessed seamlessly on a Chromebook. While iOS device access to Google tools continues to become less and less of an issue, schools that want to focus primarily on Google tools should look no further than Chromebooks. However, I would like to challenge Kim’s first two points. As he notes in his discussion around his first point, the consumption versus creation debate with iPads and Chromebooks has been made countless times by those on both sides of this discussion."

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"We have come to a point in the education technology journey where it seems rather dull to still be asking if the iPad is the right device for the classroom. The answer, in case you’ve missed the last few years of debate is that it is a great option, but this is not universally accepted and never will be. Nonetheless, one of the attributes you’ll hear put forward is that it is easy to use because of the intuitive nature of iOS. This is absolutely true; you can put the iPad into the hands of almost any child and within a short period of time they will have mastered it.

So does it then follow that you can out the iPad into the hands of teachers and expect the same results?

No."

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, August 10, 2014 7:16 PM
The emphasis on iPads is a bit of a distraction here - the issue is related more to the ability of teachers to create engaging learnng opportunities where technology use extends and enhances the students' capacity for self-direction, information literacy, collaboration. culural awareness, etc... be it with an iPad or other ICT, the point is that too many teachers still rely on delivery and control, rather than authentic opportunities for learning.
Gary Harwell's curator insight, August 18, 2014 3:38 PM

The answer if YES!

Ness Crouch's curator insight, April 15, 2015 7:14 PM
