There are useful apps for every subject and there are also apps that when a teacher is ready they can create their own AR targets.

Augmented reality works well in schools because it brings close to real life experiences to the classrooms. It’s fascinating to see the faces of students when they have the opportunity to explore space, the human body, cells or chemistry elements. You appreciate how eager and engaged they become with some simple AR apps.

If we collectively want to keep our jobs we must change the way we look at hard and soft skills. We have to find a way to redefine what they are, what is intensely human and what will remain our competitive advantage over the year in the advent of AI and job-threatening-robots. 

With research showing that less and less importance is placed on conventional intelligence and with studies indicating that it can actually be counterproductive at work to employ too much of one's IQ while at the same time having organizations move away from formal education, what role does knowledge still play in this brave new world of soft skills and humanity?

Professionals who attach a lot of their self-esteem to their intelligence will get bored easily, will get frustrated repeatedly and will feel less inclined to be truly engaged with their colleagues. What's the answer to that? Should they all aim lower to fit in? Is playing dumb a success condition?


We have enough trouble getting passion and courage into ourselves and our people - if we now decide knowledge is superfluous what are we left with?

For centuries, the majority of kids who attend school do so for one reason: it is mandatory. Think back to when you were in school, now envision you were offered the following choices:

You master the material and receive a low grade
You don’t understand the material and receive a high-grade
Which would you choose? Sure, some would rather master the material, but the majority would aim for the higher grade. In order to transform the learning process from standardization to personalization, we need to help students shift their view of school away from focusing on grades to focusing on their personal self-growth. We need to show them they are not just there because they have to be.

Recently, I had a wonderful opportunity to work with a school district in my area on one of their staff development days. I had been there before winter break to help them realize the new computer science standards in Iowa along with the 5 year STEM plan from the White House and what this all has to do with them and their classrooms. Anytime you head to a school and talk you know you are not making the connections you really want to achieve. At the time it was the only way to give them some food for thought about teaching practices, the big picture of education, and what we need to be thinking about as educators as the rest of the world is adapting quickly.

When I came back to lead a 3 hour workshop to help them experience this learning in their classroom, I was super excited. I knew if I talked computer science and the standards I would lose 80% of them. I redesigned and reworked a project experience that would allow them to undergo a build process and project idea they could visually see working in their classroom. Instead of focusing on all the latest buzzwords, I ignored them all went with a design challenge. I used design thinking as a way for them to explore and experience building, making, tinkering, coding, physical computing, and application to the classroom.

We think so. That’s why every high school should offer a course on artificial intelligence (AI). Or, better yet, incorporate a set of competencies into graduation requirements that ensure that every young person understands the technology drivers and the implications for the economy and society.

The prevalence of AI has increased dramatically in the last few years. Most people are unaware that AI is a key technology behind personal assistants (Alexa, Siri, Google), autonomous vehicles, predictive analytics (Amazon and Netflix recommendations) and medical diagnostics just to name a few.

Young people may be digital natives but most of them are digitally naive. They know little to nothing about how technology works. And few of them appreciate that smart machines are reshaping the employment landscape and challenging social norms.

When Ayanna met Cozmo the robot, both she and the robot lit up. “it was like she met a new best friend,” her Boys and Girls Club teacher James Carter said. “They just clicked.” And when Cozmo said her name, “she was so excited she didn’t know what to do with herself.”

Even better, it was Ayanna who had programmed Cozmo to say it.

Ayanna is one of roughly 50 kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania who are using a new artificial intelligence kit created by ReadyAI. It’s one of several initiatives that promise to make AI as common in the classroom as it’s becoming in our lives.

A Japanese hotel has fired hundred of its robotic staff because they weren't doing a good job. The Henn-na “Strange” Hotel in Nagasaki Prefecture has laid off 243 robots after they started to cause more work for their human colleagues. 

One of the robots that got the ax was a doll-shaped assistant placed in each room called Churi. Churi was supposed to help guests plan their stay by answering questions about local attractions

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) – the post-secondary institution recognized for integrating education and industry – is announcing a partnership with Microsoft Corp. and its Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) program to teach foundation computational skills for BC high-school students. This partnership recognizes the value of exposing young learners to the jobs of the future while equipping them with the appropriate knowledge and skills for success in the future tech workforce.


With support from the BC Ministry of Education and BCIT, the BC branch of TEALS has already educated more than 400 students across four BC high schools. Credit: Microsoft
Microsoft TEALS exists because many high schools want to offer computer science courses but often don’t have teachers who are trained on the subject. To fill this gap, TEALS volunteers work with classroom teachers to team-teach students, and to equip instructors with the knowledge to teach students on their own.

When you hear the word “robot” what comes to mind? Probably a metal, humanoid machine—something like C-3PO from Star Wars, Rosie the Robot Maid from The Jetsons, or perhaps one of the menacing Terminator robots.

At a Harvard University lab, I saw some surprising inventions that challenge our popular images of robots. One robot I wore like a glove. Another you could pull on like a pair of pants. Some robots had spongy arms that could pick up the most delicate objects. And others were so tiny and light they could take to the air on paper-thin wings, like insects.

These incredible creations are powerful examples of the exciting innovation underway in the field of robotics. They were also a reminder that while science fiction writers may lead us to fear a future of Terminator-style robots, robotics discoveries have far greater potential to improve our lives. They could offer physical support and assistance, help with search and rescue efforts, and meet medical and other technological challenges.

For too long, the American education system failed too many kids, including far too many poor kids and kids of color, without enough public notice or accountability. To combat this, leaders of all political persuasions championed the use of testing to measure progress and drive better results. Measurement has become so common that in school districts from coast to coast you can now find calendars marked “Data Days,” when teachers are expected to spend time not on teaching, but on analyzing data like end-of-year and mid-year exams, interim assessments, science and social studies and teacher-created and computer-adaptive tests, surveys, attendance and behavior notes. It’s been this way for more than 30 years, and it’s time to try a different approach.

The big numbers are necessary, but the more they proliferate, the less value they add. Data-based answers lead to further data-based questions, testing, and analysis; and the psychology of leaders and policymakers means that the hunt for data gets in the way of actual learning. The drive for data responded to a real problem in education, but bad thinking about testing and data use has made the data cure worse than the disease.
