Alex Edmans: What to trust in a "post-truth" world | TED Talk

Alex Edmans: What to trust in a "post-truth" world | TED Talk | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Only if you are truly open to the possibility of being wrong can you ever learn, says researcher Alex Edmans. In an insightful talk, he explores how confirmation bias -- the tendency to only accept information that supports your personal beliefs -- can lead you astray on social media, in politics and beyond, and offers three practical tools for finding evidence you can actually trust. (Hint: appoint someone to be the devil's advocate in your life.)

This talk was presented to a local audience at TEDxLondonBusinessSchool, an independent event. TED's editors chose to feature it for you."

A Look at MakerBot Education - Getting Smart

A Look at MakerBot Education - Getting Smart | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Schools all over the country have been working to bring 3D printing to their students to support STEM integration, design thinking, student-centered learning, project-based learning, and the future of work. While some educators are comfortable embracing 3D printing with little formal training or support, others prefer more structured training and ready-to-use lessons in order to increase their comfort level.

There are many brands of 3D printers available to schools. MakerBot, founded in 2009, sells a variety of affordable, easy-to-use, wireless-enabled 3D printers and recognizes the revolution that 3D printing can bring to education. A branch of the company called MakerBot Education provides a wealth of resources to support teachers — whether they are new to 3D printing or experienced users of the technology. I recently spoke with Mair DeMarco and Forrest Leighton at MakerBot Education to learn more about the products and resources that MakerBot offers to educators. While many of these resources are free to any teacher, some of the resources are best suited for teachers who have or plan to purchase a MakerBot brand 3D printer.

CurioCity - CurioCité | What is the best way to study for a test?

CurioCity - CurioCité | What is the best way to study for a test? | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Have you ever stayed up late the night before a test or exam, trying to cram that last bit of information into your head?

We’ve all been there. Maybe you thought the information you had to learn would be really simple. Or maybe the exam felt really far away and it just sort of “snuck up on you.” Either way, you may have crammed hoping the information would stick with you until you got through that test. And maybe you actually ended up doing okay on that test.

Many people think that cramming is actually a good study strategy. Some people have convinced themselves that they learn best under pressure. However, researchers in cognitive psychology (the science of how we think) have shown that while cramming may feel like a good strategy, it actually leads to worse memory.

50 Of The Best Writing Apps For The iPad - TeachThought

50 Of The Best Writing Apps For The iPad - TeachThought | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
The best writing apps for iPad, like any concept of ‘best,’ is subjective and further based on need and circumstance.

Are you a poet drafting when inspiration strikes? A student taking notes and writing essays? A novelist that usually uses a desktop, but needs their new iPad Pro to do work on the go?

While the idea of writing more than a few hundred words on an iPad may seem crazy, using the iPad as a powerful portable writing tool allows you to take advantage of inspiration whenever and wherever it strikes. And with iPad screens now approaching 13″ and capable of supporting USB connections to enable standalone keyboards, it’s easier and more comfortable than ever to draft a masterpiece while away from your desk with the help of an app, an iPad, and a good idea.

There’s a Proven Link Between Effective Leadership and Getting Enough Sleep - HBR | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"In our hyper-connected, 24/7 world, many of us are losing sleep — literally. Our own survey of more than 180 business leaders found that four out of 10 (43%) say they do not get enough sleep at least four nights a week. Such sleep deficiencies can undermine important forms of leadership behavior and eventually hurt financial performance. This article will explore the link between sleep and leadership before discussing solutions that can improve both individual well-being and organizational efficiency and effectiveness."

Why Growth Mindset Still Has Some Growing to Do | EdSurge News

Why Growth Mindset Still Has Some Growing to Do | EdSurge News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Over the summer, academics debated the impact of growth mindset, the belief that one’s intelligence can be developed with hard work and effort, and whether it can move the needle on academic performance. Even Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck, who is often credited with the term, chimed in with additional research supporting the efficacy of mindset interventions.

An Education Week survey found that the vast majority of educators believe that a growth-oriented mindset can help improve students’ motivation, commitment and engagement in learning. But the study found that applying those ideas to practice, and helping students shift their mindset around learning, remains an elusive challenge.

Those findings largely coincide with my observations as an administrator, coach, technology implementer, and now founder of an education company. Over the summer, my team ran a series of professional learning community sessions with dozens of educators across the country, focused on instructional practices that foster and support growth mindset. At these events, almost all teachers said they get the big ideas around growth mindset, but over 80 percent said their schools don’t implement them well."

Changing How Educators See Negative Experiences in the Classroom | MindShift | KQED News

Changing How Educators See Negative Experiences in the Classroom | MindShift | KQED News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
An easy first step is to recognize and mindfully attend to positive emotional experiences in your classroom and at home. Evolution selected for a negative attribution bias that makes us tend to dwell on the negative and ignore the positive. During a typical day, 10 great things may have happened and one horrible thing. When we get home and our partner asks us how our day went, typically we focus on the one horrible thing, forgetting about the 10 great things.

From a Stone Age perspective the negativity bias was important for our survival: The ancient human walking down a path who saw something that looked like a snake would be more likely to survive if he jumped back quickly, assuming the worst. If another kept walking, curious as to whether or not it actually was a snake, he might get bitten and die, taking himself out of the gene pool. Because natural selection favored hypervigilance, we need to make a concerted effort to notice and focus on the positive—and even savor it.

The Most Important Non-Programming Skills for Programmers - Free Code Camp - Medium

In fact, all of the skills that are in this post contribute to writing good code that improves technical projects. Most of them are really helpful for careers outside of programming too, but I’m going to focus on why they’re useful for programmers specifically."

Tired of writing your own boring code for new software? Finally, there’s an AI that can do it for you.

BAYOU is an deep learning tool that basically works like a search engine for coding: tell it what sort of program you want to create with a couple of keywords, and it will spit out java code that will do what you’re looking for, based on its best guess.

The tool was developed by a team of computer scientists from Rice University who received funding both from the military and Google. In a study published earlier this month on the preprint server arXiv, they describe how they built BAYOU and what sorts of problems it can help programmers solve.
