Canadian video debunking fake online health claims becomes viral hit | CBC News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Jonathan Jarry's job is to separate sense from nonsense in science, but he never imagined that creating a fake news video would end up being his most effective tool.

Facebook users may be familiar with his latest video for McGill University's Office for Science and Society (OSS) — it has 10 million views and counting.

The video title screams for a click: "This NATURAL TRICK can CURE YOUR CANCER." The opening graphic offers another too-good-to-be-true promise: "This amazing cure for cancer has been known since the 1800s."

Makerspaces, a Passing Trend? - Worlds of Learning @LFlemingEDU

Makerspaces, a Passing Trend? - Worlds of Learning @LFlemingEDU | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I’ve been in education for 21 years and I’ve seen many trends come and go. I am on a mission to keep maker spaces from becoming another passing trend. That’s at the core of everything I do now. Maker spaces are an educational philosophy, foundationally good, and we can’t allow them to be cast aside by the cynics who might suggest it is an idea that has run its course, just a fad that was fun but it’s time to move on now. We must work to secure the future of makerspaces. Their fundamental purpose is too important; their impact on kids too significant.

When math teachers change mindset, student grades go up

When math teachers change mindset, student grades go up | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
When teachers reexamine how they were taught math and their perceptions of their ability, student test scores and attitudes about math dramatically improve, according to a new study.

The research, which appears in the journal Education Sciences, shows that fifth-grade teachers who took an online class designed to give them a different approach to mathematics teaching and learning, achieved significantly higher test results for their students compared with a control group of teachers in the same schools who did not take the class.

How to develop soft skills in the digital age - eCampus News

How to develop soft skills in the digital age - eCampus News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

With the rise of automation, organizations worldwide have made soft skills like communication, collaboration, and critical thinking a top priority. To work successfully alongside machines, recent grads and the current workforce must rely on what makes them uniquely human.

According to the ManpowerGroup’s 2016-2017 Talent Shortage Survey, “the most important skill you can nurture is learnability” to stay employable for the long-term. Ironically, the term “learnability” often refers to how easy a software product or interface is to use. However, in the case of employability, it means professionals must become lifelong learners to remain usable themselves.

There is a glaring need for soft skills in the workforce, but a significant gap remains between what skills recent grads think they have and what organizations believe they’re proficient in. Two recent surveys—one that polled students and one that gathered the employer perspective—revealed some startling discrepancies.

Sparking Curiosity About STEM - Edutopia

Sparking Curiosity About STEM - Edutopia | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Two years ago my school started a program called STEM Events to provide our students with opportunities to see how the concepts they study in separate classes like chemistry and geometry are really integrated in real-life situations.

The program highlights the connections among the various disciplines of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math—and sometimes we add the arts, for STEAM). It also encourages our students—all girls—to explore STEM-related concepts in a noncompetitive and fun way and to develop a passion for these concepts and disciplines. Women are underrepresented in the STEM fields, so this is particularly worthwhile for our school.

Four Inquiry Qualities At The Heart of Student-Centered Teaching | MindShift | KQED News

Four Inquiry Qualities At The Heart of Student-Centered Teaching | MindShift | KQED News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Whether it be project-based learning, design thinking or genius hour, it's easy to get confused by the many education buzzwords floating about. But at their heart these pedagogies are all student-centered and there are commonalities across them that are the key to their success and far more critical than keeping the jargon straight.

Naturally, educators want to understand each of these frameworks in order to make an informed decision as to how to best meet the needs of their students. The "Tree of Inquiry" is a visual guide for educators who are interested in shifting their practice but are unsure where to begin. Inquiry-based learning is the foundation for all of these student-centered strategies -- students are asking their own questions, discovering answers and using their teachers as resources and guides. Schools and classrooms where deep inquiry is clearly at work invariably possess four specific characteristics no matter the specific type of inquiry utilized.

Helpful Resources to Teach Students Coding Skills

Helpful Resources to Teach Students Coding Skills | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Coding is an essential skill for 21st century students.  'When kids learn to code' , Mitch Resnick states, ' it enables them to learn many other things, opens up many new opportunities for learning. It's useful to make an analogy to reading and writing, when you learn to read and write it opens up opportunities for you to learn so many other things, when you learn to read you can then read to learn, which is the same thing with coding, if you learn to code you can code to learn.' We have already featured a number of interesting coding resources to use with your students in class, check out this section to learn more. In today's post, we are sharing with you another equally important coding resource . These are apps featured in iTunes App Store under the category 'Code for Everyone'. We went through that collection and curated for you the ones below.

Welcome to the Code Breaker: Build Creativity & Create a Class of Code Ninjas course.

Twenty-first century learning requires students to create, collaborate and think critically. Progress 'STEMs' directly from immediate feedback and a personalized learning platform. Coding forces students to problem solve, make mistakes and overcome barriers because programs can only run if written correctly.

This course continues the journey started with part one of this series last summer as we further explore the basics of block-based coding & how to make use of mathematical principles to create content of and for learning.

John Evans's insight:

If you missed out on this great workshop you can still take part! .

ISTE | It's time to commit to digital citizenship!

ISTE | It's time to commit to digital citizenship! | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

“Learning to be an effective digital citizen is not something that happens if we don’t actively teach it,” Culatta says. “And preparing a generation of effective digital citizens is the most important thing we can do to ensure our democracy for the future.”

Unfortunately, many educators still mistakenly conflate digital citizenship with online safety. While teaching kids to craft strong passwords and refrain from posting inappropriate pictures online is important, it’s no longer enough. In an era of fake news and increasingly bitter political polarization, it’s time for teachers to move beyond online safety and teach students how to use technology to:

* Make their communities better.
* Respectfully engage with people who have different beliefs.
* Shape and change public policy.
*Assess the validity of online sources of information.

“Digital citizenship, it turns out, is not a list of ‘don’ts’ but a list of ‘dos’,” Culatta says. “And never has it been more important than it is now.”

Empowering Students in the Disinformation Age - developing digital detectives by Jeff Hewitt

Empowering Students in the Disinformation Age - developing digital detectives by Jeff Hewitt | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"What was once the Information Age is rapidly becoming the Disinformation Age, where any information online can be used to support any viewpoint, even those that are patently false. With unrestricted internet access just a few taps on the smartphone away, it is impossible to monitor our students’ online activities constantly. We cannot be on hand to tell them what is right or wrong or true or false. Sometimes, we’re not even sure ourselves.

As educators, it falls to us to teach our students a measure of responsibility when they go online. The internet has infiltrated almost every aspect of education. We use it to take attendance, contact parents, look for activities, and do research. Our hope is that our students are using it for research and educational games."

Can an AR and VR Pilot Program From Google Prepare Kids for Future Careers? | EdSurge News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Virtual reality has been the driving force behind Google’s Expeditions app since it launched three years ago. And recently it’s added another layer of “reality” to the virtual field trip tool—AR, or augmented reality to be precise, which take the form of features such as narration, annotations, and a new “solo mode,” going on virtual trips without a guide.

This past school year Google says over one million students have used the AR tools as part of the company’s Expeditions Pioneer Program. In New York City, 99 different schools experimented with the program for the first time, giving students an up-close look at everything from famous world landmarks to the human body."
