TeachersWithApps - 22 Favorite Middle School Apps

TeachersWithApps - 22 Favorite Middle School Apps | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
I teach fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Resource Room in a small public school. We are well endowed and all students grades 6 – 8 have their own iPads. I wanted to share some of the apps we use regularly in school. Please keep in mind, this is not a complete list, just what seems to be used over and over again. Also, make note that I am a special education teacher and some of these apps may be intended for younger students. Remember that not all kids are on page 39, let alone the same book –

Computer Science Unplugged - Computer Science without a computer | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
CS Unplugged is a collection of free learning activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around.

The activities introduce students to Computational Thinking through concepts such as binary numbers, algorithms and data compression, separated from the distractions and technical details of having to use computers. Importantly, no programming is required to engage with these ideas!

CS Unplugged is suitable for people of all ages, from elementary school to seniors, and from many countries and backgrounds. Unplugged has been used around the world for over twenty years, in classrooms, science centers, homes, and even for holiday events in a park!

Let kids really think about what is happening inside their computers.
Tony Guzman's curator insight, May 15, 2015 10:18 AM

This article and video share an excellent package available for free to teach basic computer science skills. This would be an excellent way to introduce anyone interested in programming so they can master the basics and then start to dive into specific programming languages.

Remove Any Image Background With Clipping Magic

Remove Any Image Background With Clipping Magic | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
Clipping Magic is a free web app for quickly and easily removing image backgrounds.

When using images for PowerPoint presentations, blog posts and other projects, one may require removing their background so that they may blend in with the colors of your presentation slide, blog or canvas.  However, removing a background image isn’t easy and being a PRO at PhotoShop is not possible for everyone.

Technology Tidbits: Thoughts of a Cyber Hero: ChemDraw

Technology Tidbits: Thoughts of a Cyber Hero: ChemDraw | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
"ChemDraw is fantastic iPad app for Chemistry teachers. This is an app that can be used by HS/College students and is ideal way for them to create/draw molecules and then share them easily w/ others. Also, this is a nice app for educators to use to help engage their students and help w/ them studying for tests. Best of all this is a very user friendly app that has users creating drawing of molecules and reactions by simply touching and dragging their finger across the iPad screen!!!!"

Marita Diffenbaugh's curator insight, July 5, 2013 3:55 PM

I like the feature of being able to grade the discussions. I love Edmodo, however, Schoology looks like a great solution for secondary classes and their workflow.

Coding on iPads - Beginner to Pro - IPAD 4 SCHOOLS

Coding on iPads - Beginner to Pro - IPAD 4 SCHOOLS | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
Code and programming may not be the most important topics on the planet but it is an area of study that sufferers two major problems. one: an industry with millions of unfilled job positions and two: a world where not enough teachers feel confident to run programming projects. The iPad can offer a solution in these situations.

TouchCast - Creating interactive video on the iPad | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

TouchCast is an iPad app that I downloaded recently and have been exploring a bit over the last couple of weeks. It's not often an app come along which really shakes up and existing genre like video, but I think TouchCast does and in a way that can be very beneficial for learners.

Très utile pour se lancer dans les capsules !

Alison Rostetter's curator insight, March 26, 2017 11:02 AM
I let my business class do presentations on screen-casting.  It gets them a speaking grade for the end of term.  The reason I do this is a) so they can get it out of the way whenever they have time - the deadline is fairly long and b) they tend to take more trouble over it than if it were just an ordinary presentation, in front of the class.
