iTunes U update with iPad Course Creation, Student Discussions & more

iTunes U update with iPad Course Creation, Student Discussions & more | iPads for Digital Learning | Scoop.it

The new features will begin rolling out July 8 with the ability for teachers to create and manage previously uploaded lessons directly from the iPad. Apple says the course creation features will let teachers grab content from iWork, iBooks Author or “any of the over 75,000 educational apps available for iPad.” It will also let teachers use the iPad’s camera to include shots and video of real-world items in courses. The course creation feature will be available to educators in all 69 with the materials they create distributed in up 155 countries.

Picture creating your own async classroom and having the abilty to have different instructor contribute to the lessons. Very cool functions that are easy to use. Well Done Apple!

Ruby Rennie Panter's curator insight, July 11, 2014 6:12 AM

The addition of discussions moves iTunesU from an elaborate textbook to something that involves collaboration - a good move. Pity it's only for private courses.

Paula Jamieson's curator insight, August 5, 2014 4:42 PM

I see huge value in the Thinglink tool (both App and Web), especially if you are a Google school and create or store digital archives online (as all you need is a URL to link too).

Our Year 4 to 6 teachers have created a Thinglink (placed on their clasblog) using their class photo and linked each one of the students blogs to it - simple, effective and visually capturing (Whanau love being able to view their blogs easily).

Free or low cost apps

A/Prof Jon Willis's curator insight, June 16, 2014 7:12 PM

Although this is a relatively trivial example, the idea of a Bingo approach to skills building is an interesting one - at UQ we're using a passport as part of engagement processes with Aboriginal school students visiting the university. For every activity they participate in, there is a unique stamp for their passport. The bingo card idea is similar so that across a semester, students fill up their bingo card with activities that build their skills in a range of domains, or across a range of technologies or tools.

Easy iPad Management for Education- At Scale!

Easy iPad Management for Education- At Scale! | iPads for Digital Learning | Scoop.it

iPad deployment includes all of the steps between buying an iPad and beginning to use the device. For an individual’s personal iPad, this is often a very fast and easy process lasting no longer than five minutes: You just open the box, turn it on, download the apps you want on your device, and go. But for a school, or district, with potentially hundreds of iPads–each one requiring a specialized list of apps that need to be purchased before protecting the devices with a case and sending them out to classrooms. As an administrator or teacher, there are a few things you will need to know before you deploy your iPads

Here's How iOS 7 Promises to Make iPad Management Easier for Schools

Here's How iOS 7 Promises to Make iPad Management Easier for Schools | iPads for Digital Learning | Scoop.it

"

Apple’s engineers are working hard towards meeting their Fall 2013 release date for iOS 7. However, their PR department is also working hard to ensure that educators know the full extent of the changes that are coming, and how they will impact iPad management in the classroom. The full list of changes can be found here, but I discuss some of my favorites below and share why they are a good move for Apple to make…especially in light of the forthcoming Android Google Play for Education Store."

Learning and Teaching with iPads: Brainstorming in the iPad classroom

Learning and Teaching with iPads: Brainstorming in the iPad classroom | iPads for Digital Learning | Scoop.it

"While there is nothing new about utilising technology to brainstorm, using the iPad has added benefits.

The touch interface, excellent visuals and portability of the iPad can make it easier and simpler to encourage students to generate new ideas, organize their known knowledge about a topic and make connections with ideas and the written word.

There are lots of great brainstorming/mindmapping Apps available, but one that we have found useful at all school levels is Popplet."

"Choice boards are powerful tools for providing students with both choice and direction in their work.

The idea, creatively shown below from teacher/blogger Monica Evon in the form of a menu, allows teachers to guide students towards certain forms of academic practice, or demonstration of specific standards. If, for example, you want students to show they understand how to calculate the area of a circle from real-life applications, you can create 8 different ways for them to show it."
