As much as teachers may want to be told what to do with new technology, says principal Matt Renfrew, professional developers can end up limiting potential when they plan for specific outcomes rather than possibilities.

Focus on what you want students to learn and do first. Then see how technology can support that.

Agreed, and insightful by all. Always put your students' needs first.

OH YES!!  Can't recall how many times in PD I've encountered staff wanting to reduce the whole exercise to collecting recipes as opposed to developiing capabilities that can be generalised and adapted according to learngin requirements!  Seems to occur from K-12 but especially so in Higher ED (where many teachers have no rich education in Teaching and Learning)

I have iPads in the Classroom! Now What?

I have iPads in the Classroom! Now What? | iPads | Scoop.it

"It sounds so cool to say “We have/use iPad in our school/classroom”.  Parents, community members and stakeholders might equal hearing such a statement with the assurance that the teacher/school is on the cutting edge of technology and their students are being prepared for a new world.  iPads (just as Smartboards used to) are a visual, easily counted and recognizable icon for such assurance.  Many schools around the globe are jumping on that proverbial “iPad bandwagon”

iPads are being handed out to faculty.a small number of devices or a class iPad cart is made available for classrooms to checkout.students might be asked to bring, lease or use school owned devices to create a 1:1 environment

You might be one of the teachers who is excited about the possibilities or apprehensive and fearful of the seemingly overwhelming task in front of you how to manage your classroom, students and the devices AND at the same time use them to improve student learning.

You might be thinking…

I totally agree that owning the devices is not even half he battle? Have you invested as much time and thought into infrastructure so that they can be used to their full potential? Have you invested in staff traing (and understanding)? How will they raise standards?

The 5 Important Elements of The 21st Century Classroom Infographic ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

The 5 Important Elements of The 21st Century Classroom Infographic ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads | Scoop.it

"The pace with which technology is developing makes it really impossible for anyone to predict what kind of classrooms we will have in the next few decades. What is apparent, however, is the fact that new ways of learning are mushrooming here and there as a direct impact of the embrace of this technology in education. Mobile learning, blended learning, flipped classroom, to mention but a few, are some immediate examples that come to the surface when talking about this interactional relationship between the digital and the educational.

This excellent graphic below sheds more light on how classrooms have been transformed by technology and draws clear comparisons between several learning modes. I invite you to have a look and share with us your thoughts about it. Enjoy"

Marie Arndt's curator insight, June 21, 2013 7:40 AM

Infrastructure and proper training for teachers are essentials to make this work. Often teachers are not given enough time to learn about the new technology, which makes them negative towards the change. Management must see the pedagogical benefits of technology in the classroom, not as a money saving exercise!

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, July 3, 2013 1:13 PM

We should not predict the classrooms of the future. What we need to do is help children learn the skills to be in those classrooms and workplaces which are turbulent and uncertain.
