Use the Impossible to Fail Quiz to Give Students Instant Remediation

Use the Impossible to Fail Quiz to Give Students Instant Remediation | EdTech News_Upper School | Scoop.it

"Does your gut (and your assessment) tell you some students didn't get it the first time you taught it? Would you like to give students remediation exclusively for concepts they don't understand? Isn’t it impossible to deliver precise remediation to each student in your classroom?"

The quiz is impossible to fail because it directs students to a review video when they incorrectly answer a question. Students then re-try the question. Every time they answer incorrectly, they are directed to the video. When students answer correctly, they move on to the next question. The quiz is meant as a opportunity for students to practice and receive remediation when needed. It is not meant to be an assessment tool. Each student will eventually choose the right answer to the questions.

The backpack-sized jet engine was built by a team of technicians, machinists and engineers who work at a GE Aviation’s Additive Development Center outside Cincinnati, a lab focused on developing additive manufacturing, a next-generation technique that can make complex 3D structures by melting metal powder layer upon layer. They built the engine over the course of several years to test the technology’s abilities and to work on a side project together.

"I enjoy discussing iPad and other edtech resources with my colleague and friend Sylvia Duckworth almost every week through Twitter. Sylvia is a leader in the French teaching community in Canada, and has created an enormous amount of resources for language teachers to use. I asked her if she wanted to collaborate on this post, and she quickly agreed to do so. Below is a list of iPad apps that we both use in our language classrooms. The ones marked with an * are the essential, must-have ones. We have divided the list into two categories: Content consumption apps and content creation apps."

Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, May 17, 2015 11:54 AM

Vygotsky talked of the Zone of Proximal Development, and this article is in line with that foundational philosophy about learning.  When we think about improving schools, both of Vygotsky and this article apply.  We need leaders, teachers, and students operating outside their comfort zone, taking risks, setting goals, and learning.  There is a danger in struggling schools to push too hard and move buying the productive zone for learning.  This article speaks well to that aspect of learning.  With good intentions, leaders at building, district, and state level often push a school and omits staff beyond the productive learning zone into the danger zone.  This is done through programs, initiatives, and monitoring often with the goal of providing support, but with the result of overwhelming the school and staff.

Where the Magic Happens: library maker programs | The Maker Issue

Where the Magic Happens: library maker programs | The Maker Issue | EdTech News_Upper School | Scoop.it
The maker zeitgeist has evolved far beyond the day when an educator might set objects—say, a box of robotic LEGOs—in a library corner and call it a “maker lab.” Educators are now focusing on how the maker movement can be truly meaningful: it’s not about where making is happening, but about how creating, experimenting, and collaborating impact education. In addition, some high schoolers tinkering their free periods away can discover a passion—sometimes leading to a future educational focus or even scholarship money.

“The maker movement…encourages a growth mind-set, which tolerates risk and failure and maybe even encourages it,” says Laura Fleming, library media specialist with the New Milford (NJ) High School. “It has been the great equalizer within, and in some ways against, our modern education system by allowing opportunities for creativity and innovation to take place through informal learning.”

Deleting Photos & Videos – How to Free Up Storage Space | iPad Academy

Deleting Photos & Videos – How to Free Up Storage Space | iPad Academy | EdTech News_Upper School | Scoop.it

"I recently received this request for managing storage on an iPad:

"Hello I hope you can help me! I deleted a video to free up storage
space on my ipad, but even though the video is gone, my storage is
still full! The video was very large, so I thought this would free up
space. Do I have to do something more to fully delete the video and
reclaim the storage space it had used?"

iOS 8 added a new album in the Photos app called Recently Deleted. The purpose of this album is to offer you a way to easily recover deleted photos. Photos and videos are held here for 30 days, then permanently deleted. You’ll see the number of days remaining for each item. This tells you when each photo or video will be permanently deleted."

The Maker Movement is a technological and creative revolution underway around the world. Fortunately for educators, the Maker Movement overlaps with the natural inclinations of children and the power of learning by doing. Embracing the lessons of the Maker Movement holds the keys to reanimating the best, but oft-forgotten learner-centered teaching practices. New tools and technology, such as 3D printing, robotics, microprocessors, wearable computing, e-textiles, “smart” materials, and new programming languages are being invented at an unprecedented pace. The Maker Movement creates affordable — even free — versions of these inventions, and shares tools and ideas online, creating a vibrant, collaborative community of global problem-solvers.
