I've been following Kathy Schrock for almost as long as she's been on the net. I've heard her speak multiple times at ISTE conferences and have always referred to her indispensable ShrockGuide to the Internet as a 'Schrock-Solid' source of expertly curated content. Indeed all of her sites are 'Bookmark Worthy': http://ipads4teaching.net , http://kathyschrock.net , and http://blog.kathyschrock.net

If you haven't been to her sites, what a treat awaits. If you have, you know I'm not exaggerating!  Thanks Kathy for all you do!

Teacher's Aide or Surveillance Nightmare? Alexa Hits the Classroom - Digital Education - Education Week

Teacher's Aide or Surveillance Nightmare? Alexa Hits the Classroom - Digital Education - Education Week | IPad pilot | Scoop.it
For better or worse, a new technology is making its way from consumers' homes into America's classrooms: voice-controlled "smart speaker" systems from companies such as Amazon and Google.

The internet-enabled devices listen to what users say, send audio recordings to the cloud, translate that information into commands, and respond accordingly—providing users with a personal digital voice assistant such as Amazon's Alexa, which teachers are now using to help with everything from setting a classroom timer to leading a group of 3rd graders through a spelling test.

Groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union are raising alarms about privacy.

"Should students be required to submit themselves to always-on voice-tracking and other third-party surveillance in order to get an education?" asked ACLU staff technologist Daniel Kahn Gillmor in an interview.

Still, the early K-12 adopters of smart speakers and digital voice assistants are generally enthusiastic.

Summer time is 'recharge' time for teachers. People who don't teach often think that teachers are 'on vacation' in the summer time.  Not true, teachers are laid off during the summer.  I was paid for school days worked for 25 years.  I will admit, I really enjoyed some of the layoffs!

The document scanning feature found in Apple's stock Notes app is a great way to digitize all sorts of print-based content, from letters and receipts to recipes and photos.

If you often make a digital record of paper in this way, you'll be familiar with the typical steps involved: unlock your device, launch the Notes app from the Home screen, create a new note, tap the "+" button, choose Scan Documents, then line up the document you want to shoot and save.

Generation Z: What will be the legacy they leave behind? - National | Globalnews.ca

Generation Z: What will be the legacy they leave behind? - National | Globalnews.ca | IPad pilot | Scoop.it

"Gen Z’s present has always been one marked by upheaval and rapid change — economic, social and technological — with their futures imperilled by big problems like global warming, international terrorism and resource scarcity. But as they contend with, and build upon, the legacies of past cohorts, they are also laying the foundations for their own.

So the question becomes, what kind of world will gen Z leave to their children and grandchildren?"

The Entire Series:

1. Generation Z: Make room for Canada’s connected, open and optimistic generation

2. Is generation Z glued to technology? ‘It’s not an addiction; it’s an extension of themselves’

3. Generation Z: Waiting — often months — to get mental health help

4. Generation Z isn’t interested in dating or sex — or so we thought

5. Generation Z — Online, connected and set on fixing the world

6. Generation Z and the (achievable) dream jobs they want

7. Generation Z and the rise of digital influencers as celebrities

8. Generation Z: What will be the legacy they leave behind?
