"You don't have to be a brain expert to know that trying to teach teenagers can be an especially difficult task.

While the brain continues to grow and learn at every age, teenagers' brains go through a specific set of circumstances that literally change the way they think. "In many ways, it's the most tumultuous time of brain development since coming out of the womb," said Jay Giedd of the National Institute of Mental Health on Frontline's "Inside the Teenage Brain."

"7 Simple Ways You Can Help Students Pay Attention In A Traditional Classroom

1. Use the 10:2 method (2 minutes of response for every 10 minutes of instruction.)

2. Incorporate movement into your lessons

3. Pick up the pace

4. Provide frequent feedback

5. Allow 5-7 seconds of “think time”

6. Have students use the 3-2-1 method of summarizing

7. Periodically pause mid-sentence

+1 - Randomly call on students. Don't let students 'blurt out' the answers. Don't call only on students who raise their hands. Don't let students 'opt-out.' Do allow students to ask for help or a 'life-line.' Do make the student repeat the correct answer. You repeat the correct response. (Wait Time 2)

In addition to a physical exercise, learn to practise a relaxation routine, like meditation.
