Using Google Docs and Drive with NVDA - American Foundation for the Blind

Using Google Docs and Drive with NVDA - American Foundation for the Blind | Assistive Technology | Scoop.it
The AFB Technology Training and Awareness Program initial pilot phase consists of an online self-paced training course on the use of Google Docs

and Google Drive with the free NVDA screen reader for Windows.
Merja Saarela's insight:

We need more pilots to show how accessible are our ICT-tools for people with disabilities

American Foundation for the Blind is doing a great favour for all of us. This piloting Google Docs and Drive with blind people is something we need to do much more. I'm collaborating a lot with people with different kind of disabilities, or should I say with different abilities. Every now and then I'm facing situation, that I would love to know if tools that we choose to use are accessible. It is a question we need to think when ever we write joint articles or other kind of papers or share documents. I look forward to see results of this piloting.

Please Touch the Art

Please Touch the Art | Assistive Technology | Scoop.it

The tactile experience is still almost entirely banned in the art world.  What does the science say about tactile art experience? Steven Hsiao, a neuroscientist who specializes in the aesthetics of touch at Johns Hopkins, tested the audience’s reaction to different materials, altering the shape, size and texture of the originals. Two of Hsiao’s conclusions are worth highlighting:

  1. Both visually impaired and sighted people found rougher textures unpleasant and smoother ones more agreeable, but the blind felt so more intensely.
  2. Secondly, some of the replicas were a mere outline of the actual statue: Those basic copies didn’t look or feel anything like the original, but people with vision found them extremely comfortable to touch. The blind, on the other hand, didn’t like those shapes at all. Since they couldn’t feel any details, the enjoyment of the object was gone.

“Sighted people get the same information,” Hsiao says. “But they don’t appreciate it the same way.” Those who can see, it seems, simply aren’t as aware of the message their hands convey. And that’s a result of centuries spent neglecting our sense of touch.

Merja Saarela's insight:

Today we try to create our surrounding accessible for all. The most dominate information around us is visual in nature - the broad picture is such easy to capture with our eyes. But when it comes to art, it is not a question of a broad picture, it's more about the "picture" we create with all our senses - kind of multi-sensory whole.

This article helps us understand the role of haptics and touch experiences of art. Touching art piece is definitely a huge learning experience. Georgina Kleege, a writer and an English professor at the University of California, Berkeley, says that the pleasure of visually discerning the smallest details in a Renaissance painting or on a stained glass window, for instance, resembles the intellectual enjoyment of actually feeling every inch of a piece—touching its uneven lines, appreciating how smooth or rough it is.  Keege explains: “Part of it is the pleasure of the material, and part of it is that my hands are where the artist’s hands once were. It’s definitely not about playing a game of guessing what I’m touching—in some ways, it all feels like an abstraction.”

Mindtunes: Three Disabled Music Fans Make Music With Only Their Minds
Merja Saarela's insight:

Amazing! This is just something fantastic you have to here! Everyone should have the right to impress oneself with artistic ways. With art it is possible to put together and impress how you see, feel and think about the world around you. Often for people with disabilities this is much easier to say than to do.  New technology gives very interesting and inspiring new tools for artists. In this project musicians learned new technology in order to reach the brain waves and convert them into sound waves.

Giving children ample opportunities to develop sound investigative skills at an early age is essential to nurturing their ability to think critically and scientifically as they get older.
Merja Saarela's insight:
It's just wonderful how learning and teaching methods are changing when using inspiring tools. I specially like the way the research perspective has pop up in classrooms. The fact is, that we all use some form of scientific inquiry in our daily lives. We learn about the world around us through the same vehicles of experimentation, trial, error, and experience. And now using of iPads makes this learning and documentation part of teaching process with small children.

The Flic Smart Button is just one button to control your apps in smart devices, or to control lights, alarms, door locks, even automatic cab calls, turn on entertainment system, TV, sound system, and more. You can stick it on a wall, on your clothes, on a night table next to your bed or almost anywhere you like. And think about your aged parent, you can stick a button on photos of his/her dearest and he/she can connect instantly with his/her phone to this person. Absolutely worth trying.

A Cancer-Surviving Composer’s Extraordinary Movement

A Cancer-Surviving Composer’s Extraordinary Movement | Assistive Technology | Scoop.it
A sudden and rare brain tumor leads to an accomplished musician’s brush with death and a gap between his brain and his body – but Anthony Ptak will make music any way he can.
Merja Saarela's insight:

Another moving success story of technology helping us to survive and maintain who we are in a bottom of our hard.  Anthony Ptak, a respected composer and ex music professor says: “Jazz came from the kind of grind when things go wrong. Life isn’t harmony and everyone smiling together. That doesn’t happen, man. Shit goes wrong and that’s what jazz is.” He says, if he lost music, he would have lost a part of his soul. Before he got his cancer, he founded the New York Theremin Society — a theremin is an electronic instrument first made in Russia in the early 1900s and controlled via antennas, without physical contact. One of the last projects he worked on before his diagnosis was marrying music and technology by coding a computer program to play along with the theremin. Now he is using these innovative tools and continuing with his inspiring music.

A Blind Paralympian Will Use Google Glass So Kids Can See His Point Of View

A Blind Paralympian Will Use Google Glass So Kids Can See His Point Of View | Assistive Technology | Scoop.it
Kids will be able to see through athlete Lex Gilette's eyes, even though he can't himself.
Merja Saarela's insight:

Lex Gillette on sokea huippu-urheilija, pituushyppääjä. Videoiden kautta Gillette tekee näkyväksi muille, erityisesti lapsille, millaista pituushyppääminen on sokean henkilön näkökulmasta. Gillette haluaa tuoda näkyville kuinka paraolympistin taidoilla ja sisukkaalla harjoittelulla päästään loistaviin suorituksiin.

Gillette on yksi Classroom Champions -organisaation Olympia- ja Paraolympialaislähettiläistä, jotka käyvät omalla esimerkillään vahvistamassa erityislasten kouluissa vahvistamassa lasten itseluottamusta ja rohkaisemassa asettamaan itselleen kunnianhimoisia tavoitteita. Glassroom Champion -organisaatio on Olympia kultamitalisti Steve Meslerin ja Leigh Mesler Parisen perustama järjestö. Järjestö voitti tässä kuussa yhden viidestä Googlen Giving Through Glass kilpailun palkinnoista: Google-lasit, 25000 dollarin apuraha, pääsy Google-lasien kehittäjien joukkoon ja matka Google HQ.

In our society most information is dokumented in written mode. I guess it's great to get new tools to help reading. Though I wonder how much help would it be for blind people to reading this slow. All blind people that I know, use very fast reading mode f.ex. in iPad's Voice over. The hearing and information receaving is comparable to pace of reading silent with sight. So who might get help from this tool? I guess this tool will work for those people who struggle understanding what they read, reading beginners and those who have problems keeping their eyes on a line.
