Why Have Organizations Realized the Importance of Efficient Data Managers

Why Have Organizations Realized the Importance of Efficient Data Managers | 5G, IoT, Big Data, Analytics, AI & Cloud | Scoop.it
adopt strict data management measures.
Al Sedghi's insight:

Enterprise Data Management (EDM) is a critical function within industries such as Financial, Healthcare and Telecommunications that must adopt strict data management measures. Organizations within these sectors must efficiently create, integrate, distribute and manage data for all enterprise applications, processes and entities requiring timely and accurate data delivery. EDM also addresses the transmission of different data sets within processes and applications that rely on the consumption of these data sets to complete business processes or transactions. EDM addresses software applications, computing and network infrastructure, business logic and policies used to manage enterprise data flow. Organizations must implement EDM through a range of processes and will need collaboration through different departments, such as IT, finance and operations.

How The Internet Of Things Will Change Credit Card Acceptance

How The Internet Of Things Will Change Credit Card Acceptance | 5G, IoT, Big Data, Analytics, AI & Cloud | Scoop.it
With IoT credit card companies will be able to collect more data, analyze it in smart ways, and automatically take action at the exact right moment. It’s a win-win for both customers, retailers, and credit card companies.
Al Sedghi's insight:

Payment processors have started investigating with IoT and contactless technologies for purchases. Essentially, the IoT has started  to change the way we shop and pay for in-store goods.  The number of ways you'll be able to make purchases in the future is amazing. For example: Visa and UK hardware maker Kerv Wearables have both distinctly developed smart rings tailored with embedded NFC chips that can be used at points of sale.  Barclaycard is also designing a contactless payment jacket concept. Developed in partnership with men's clothing firm Lyle & Scott, the jacket lets its wearer to make payments with a flick of the cuff, proving how new payment technology can be embedded in almost anything people wear. Amazon, Google & Apple are all thinking and planning big on virtual assistant platforms, which allow users to issue voice commands to connected devices

Inevitable architecture: Complexity gives way to simplicity and flexibility

Inevitable architecture: Complexity gives way to simplicity and flexibility | 5G, IoT, Big Data, Analytics, AI & Cloud | Scoop.it
How is your IT systems architecture holding up? CIOs are struggling with the challenge of keeping systems current while incorporating cloud, mobile, analytics, and other disruptive technologies. The path to modernization begins with automating routine tasks and revitalizing your technology stack.
Al Sedghi's insight:

Leverage open source, open standards, virtualization, and containerization and embrace the cloud to be a digital enterprise. Last year Walmart launched the DevOps platform called OneOps, an open-source cloud and application life cycle management platform that is designed to help developers write and launch apps more quickly and made code for the OneOps project available on GitHub.  The benefits: it works with multiple public and private cloud platforms out of the box. These include Microsoft Azure, Rackspace, AWS and CenturyLink Cloud, as well as any OpenStack cloud (Walmart was an early adoptor of OpenStack and is still one of its largest users). So what’s the catch: It provides greater control of cloud environment which means that instead of cloud providers commanding what proprietary tools and technologies you have to use, or how much bandwidth you can have, OneOps provides control back into the hands of your developers

5 lessons learned from making a banking chatbot

5 lessons learned from making a banking chatbot | 5G, IoT, Big Data, Analytics, AI & Cloud | Scoop.it
Chatbots still need a human backup
Al Sedghi's insight:

Chatbots can’t give the right answer unless questions are asked exactly how the chat bot was set up to interpret a user input. Often, chatbots do not interpret the question accurately, and they are not known to be able to interpret multiple questions asked at once. So, for now, there are some challenges: Chatbots “Teller” functionalities, including developing features like bank account integration, adding new messaging channels, and operationalizing need to be improved. There needs to be a backup or parallel support process. Integration with a live support person or CRM the bank is using is essential, especially when the chatbot is stuck.

Why Open Source is Driving the Big Data Market - Data Economy

Why Open Source is Driving the Big Data Market - Data Economy | 5G, IoT, Big Data, Analytics, AI & Cloud | Scoop.it
Patrick Booth, VP UK & Ireland, Talend considers the legacy versus next generation decision.
Al Sedghi's insight:

Here is an analysis on why you should consider Open Source Software for your development activities:

  1. Cost: Typically Free or inexpensive: No need to pay for expensive license
  2. Continuous Improvement: You are benefiting from the development community who constantly improve the software and fix the bugs.
  3. Control on how/where you want to use it: You can install on any machine since you don’t have to worry about licenses, but more importantly you can go ahead and modify the software based on your needs. You have the source and can benefit from the development community to guide you in the process
  4. Not locked in: This is so important, since you will not be locked into a proprietary environment with a specific company that develops products which are primarily compatible with each other. That also keeps you away from company’s roadmap, and that you don’t have to wait for them to add features that you may need at the time not being offered by the company

On the other hand, I would advise you to be aware of:

  1. Hidden Costs and oversee the amount of time and resources you will devote towards software integration and deployment as it can get out of control.
  2. Learning Curve: Ensure that you have the internal expertise to work effectively with your chosen open source product. Support may not be available outside of email or local development community. You may need to allocate extra time to hire and train to fulfill the skills gap.
  3. Security risks: Be aware of security risk of using open source. Spend time to analyze the open source code for security vulnerabilities, mitigate / improve the software
  4. Sustainability: Sometimes, open-source projects become inactive or get shut down since the maintainers may lose interest or due to lack of time abandon the project. Open-source projects flourish when developers are also users of the software, so it is important to perform detailed due diligence from the very beginning so that you have sufficient information to assess risk accurately

The potential “advantages” of the pros outweigh the risks of the “disadvantages” which is why open source software dominates the landscape.

Start-up Thinxtra is raising $20m to take on Telstra with national internet of things network

Start-up Thinxtra is raising $20m to take on Telstra with national internet of things network | 5G, IoT, Big Data, Analytics, AI & Cloud | Scoop.it
Sydney-based Thinxtra is raising $20 million to take on Telstra with a national internet of things network.
Al Sedghi's insight:

LPWAN solutions are ideal for devices that need to send smaller amounts of data over long ranges, with particular constraints around power consumption and computational horsepower. Many of the LPWAN solutions perform well in obstructed environments – like in cities and rugged outdoor environments. There are developments in traditional cellular networks that are improving their suitability for IoT applications – these include the array of low-power, low-bandwidth LTE developments like LTE-MTC, NB-LTE-M, and NB-IoT (now known as CAT-M1 and CAT-M2). These solutions however are largely unavailable at the present time; traditional cellular (2G, 3G, and 4G LTE) is still best suited for higher-bandwidth applications and is not as cost effective as LPWAN for a myriad of IoT use cases.

A critical area to consider when you want to implement a LPWAN solution is the ownership and business model of the standard. The three major LPWAN solutions are Sigfox, LoRaWAN and Ingenu.  Sigfox is the most "closed", since all traffic through a Sigfox deployment must be routed through the Sigfox cloud platform, which demands users to sign with Sigfox and continuing paying the firm to keep up the deployment. One option is that users can buy Sigfox hardware from a wide range of vendors. LoRa is much more "open" in that users can source LoRa modules and gateways from hardware vendors, then deploy their own networks and manage them privately. The closed element in LoRa is that Semtech is the only organization presently manufacturing the radio chips themselves, but this is not as restrictive since several vendors farther downstream sell the required communications hardware. Ingenu offers both models: users can buy hardware directly from Ingenu, then deploy and manage their own solutions, while Ingenu also sells data plans to public networks that the firm manages itself.
