Sad statistics: 25 Alarming Global Warming Facts | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Global warming is among the most alarming environmental issues that the world faces today. This phenomenon does not simply involve the significant rise in the earth’s temperature but a lot more. The adverse effects of global warming have become more and more apparent since the dawn of the 20th century, with more hurricanes and tropical storms causing massive destruction in different areas around the world, more animal species losing their habitats and becoming extinct, and more people dying because of too much heat. Here are 25 alarming global warming statistics.

100% Renewable Energy Worldwide Isn't Just Possible—It's Also More Cost-Effective

100% Renewable Energy Worldwide Isn't Just Possible—It's Also More Cost-Effective | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Research shows that existing renewable energy potential and technologies, coupled with storage, can generate enough to meet global electricity demand by 2050.

Transitioning the world to 100 percent renewable electricity isn't just some environmentalist pipe dream—it's "feasible at every hour throughout the year" and is more cost-effective than the current system, which largely relies on fossil fuels and nuclear energy, a new study claims.

This stunning statement from General Motors will keep Big Oil up at night | Joe omm | ThinkProgress.org | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

“General Motors believes in an all-electric future,” Mark Reuss, GM’s head of global product development, announced in a corporate press release Monday.

These are remarkable words for a company that has become a global behemoth over the past century by making and selling tens of millions of cars, SUVs, and light trucks that run on liquid fossil fuels. When you add in plans from huge, fast-growing markets like China and India to quickly shift to EVs and end the sale of petrol cars, it’s clear that upending the car market will also upend the oil market.

Global warming may not only cause more destructive hurricanes, it could also be shaking the ground beneath our feet.

Devastating hurricane? More than 1,000 lives lost? It must be climate change! Almost inevitably, Hurricane Matthew’s recent rampage across the Caribbean and south-eastern US has been fingered by some as a backlash of global warming driven by humanity’s polluting activities, but does this really stack up?

Climate pessimism has had quite a run lately. Maybe we need to redefine what optimism means.

In recent years, it has become increasingly common to frame the climate change problem as a kind of countdown — each year we emit more carbon dioxide, narrowing the window for fixing the problem, but not quite closing it yet. After all, something could still change. Emissions could still start to plunge precipitously. Maybe next year. Read more: click image or title.

"There’s a new study out which presents a series of 20 steps that can be taken to naturally mitigate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Taken together, the effect on carbon levels would be equivalent to stopping the use of fossil fuels entirely."

"We show that “natural climate solutions” (NCS) can provide over one-third of the cost-effective climate mitigation needed between now and 2030 to stabilize warming to below 2 °C. Alongside aggressive fossil fuel emissions reductions, NCS offer a powerful set of options for nations to deliver on the Paris Climate Agreement while improving soil productivity, cleaning our air and water, and maintaining biodiversity." Read more: click image or title.

Tesla can rebuild Puerto Rico power grid

Tesla can rebuild Puerto Rico power grid | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk says that he believes he can rebuild Puerto Rico’s power grid with batteries and solar power.

“The Tesla team has [built solar grids] for many smaller islands around the world, but there is no scalability limit, so it can be done for Puerto Rico too,” Musk tweeted on Thursday. “Such a decision would be in the hands of the PR govt, PUC, any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of PR.”
Tesla has already done similar battery and solar power projects with the Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative in Hawaii and in American Samoa.

Both projects were designed to supply power for much smaller populations than Puerto Rico, however. Still, the Tesla CEO is confident that his company’s existing operations can be scaled up to meet larger demand.

Currently, under 10 percent of the island has power. Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló said on Monday that it could take one month to restore power to only a quarter of households in the territory.

The Puerto Rico state owned electric company says that some households be without power for four to six months. Any Tesla solution would likely be aimed more toward the long-term, rather than the immediate restoration of power that's required.

Greenland: how rapid climate change on world's largest island will affect us all

Greenland: how rapid climate change on world's largest island will affect us all | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

The largest wildfire ever recorded in Greenland was recently spotted close to the west coast town of Sisimiut, not far from Disko Island where I research retreating glaciers. The fire has captured public and scientific interest not just because its size and location came as a surprise, but also because it is yet another signpost of deep environmental change in the Arctic.

Greenland is an important cog in the global climate system. The ice sheet which covers 80% of the island reflects so much of the sun’s energy back into space that it moderates temperatures through what is known as the “albedo effect”. And since it occupies a strategic position in the North Atlantic, its meltwater tempers ocean circulation patterns.

Most of Greenland is covered by more than a kilometre of ice. Eric Gaba / NGDC, CC BY-SA
But Greenland is especially vulnerable to climate change, as Arctic air temperatures are currently rising at twice the global average rate. Environmental conditions are frequently setting new records: “the warmest”, “the wettest”, “the driest”.

Despite its size, the fire itself represents only a snapshot of Greenland’s fire history. It alone cannot tell us about wider Arctic climate change.

But when we superimpose these extraordinary events onto longer-term environmental records, we can see important trends emerging. Read more: click image or title.

How To Write An Elevator Pitch

How To Write An Elevator Pitch | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Developing an elevator pitch is a popular way to design and practice a process that will allow us to be prepared to sell our product in nearly any scenario.

In the world of startups, every moment in the face of a potential investor can be critical. The first meeting with them, whether by plan or by accident, may only offer a few of those moments. When deciding how to pitch an idea to a business that could make or break a product launch, it's important to understand how to optimize each second of that pitch.

Developing an elevator pitch is a popular way to design and practice a process that will allow us to be prepared to sell our product in nearly any scenario. To understand the concept of an elevator pitch, it helps to imagine it in context: We've just entered an elevator, and we realize the person in the elevator with us is someone that could be key to lifting our project off the ground. We know we have one chance to make an impression and a brief time to impress. It's an opportunity that may never present itself again; how well we've prepared for that moment will determine the likelihood of our success. Read more: click image or title.
