Prebiotics Study

Researchers studied the effect of prebiotics on gut health and REM sleep of young rats. The test animals were given a diet rich in prebiotics starting when they were 3 weeks old.2

The researchers noted that in previous studies, results suggested daily stress could alter your gut microbiome in a way that would alter your sleep-wake cycle. Their goal was to determine if using prebiotics might help improve sleep quality under stress.

The rats were fed a manufactured diet containing prebiotic fiber or a control diet for four weeks. After the first four weeks the researchers analyzed the excrement and found those eating prebiotics had an increase in beneficial gut bacteria, compared to the control group.3

As the friendly bacteria metabolize the prebiotic fiber, they not only grow and multiply but also excrete a metabolite beneficial to your brain health.4 Rats eating the diet rich in prebiotics also spent more time in restful and restorative NREM sleep than those eating the control diet. The researchers wrote:5

"Given that sufficient NREM sleep and proper nutrition can impact brain development and function and that sleep problems are common in early life, it is possible that a diet rich in prebiotics started in early life could help improve sleep, support the gut microbiota and promote optimal brain/psychological health."

Research on Vitamin D3

If you're interested in natural health you have no doubt seen many articles and health professionals talking about the benefits of vitamin D 3. Arginine and Oral Health

Are You Getting Enough Fiber?

Fiber is found in many different foods and has been used by healthcare professionals to lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar. There's been a lot of research on dietary fiber that shows that it is beneficial in reducing colon cancer, hemorrhoids, constipation and obesity. Many healthcare professionals believe that most Americans are deficient in dietary fiber.

Many healthcare professionals believe that dietary fiber helps to absorb toxins within the body, especially the colon, and remove them through the natural illumination process. Plastics and Heart Health

No doubt, if you have an interest in being healthy you have heard of the dangers of plastics in our environment. One plastic that is in the news a lot regarding health is Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA’s have been linked to many health concerns. One conern is how BPA is not broken down inside our bodies. It actually acts as a hormone disrupter inside our bodies and can cause all kinds of problems from hormone imbalances to obesity.

So how does BPA get into our bodies in the first place. Well, you would be hard pressed to find a food that does not come in contact with plastic. Many plastic water bottles are made with BPA. Canned food that we purchase are lined with a plastic that is made from Bisphenol A. Most alarming in all the studies on BPA is that it seems to be a potential risk for children and pregnant mothers. In 2012 the FDA banned the use of BPA in baby bottles.

Now there seems to be another risk from BPA in our diet, high blood pressure. A study preformed by the journal Hypertension looked at 60 participants who were given soy milk from glass and soy milk from a container made with BPA. The results. Those drinking from the BPA containers had a 1600 percent increase in BPA levels in their urine and their systolic blood pressure rose onaverage 5 percent.

Microbiome and Health

What many people do not know about their body is that there are more foreign microbes on us and in us than there are of our own body’s cells. How many more? We are actually outnumbered 10 to 1.

That may be an interesting fact but did you know that it is this microbiome in and on our bodies that play a significant part in our health and well-being. It even plays a part in how much we eat and how much we weight.

Understanding this can be a major change in the way we see our health and in the way we maintain it or even treat disease. If what we put into our bodies has an effect on our microbiome, and it does, then perhaps we need to be more careful about our choices.

GMO’s For Food

Many scientist like to point out that GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organism) pose no threat to the health of the human body. Could it be that these scientists are not considering the health of our microbiome? If GMO’s have an impact on the microbes that line our gut, then they definitely have an impact on our health and well-being. I think it would be interesting to see a study that shows the results that GMO’s have on the microbiome community. Perhaps there is some GMO scientist that would want to volunteer for such a study.
