#Occupywallstreet: Social Media as a Strategic Frame » Cyborgology | Internet censorship and circumvention tools | Scoop.it

Why the over-emphasis on social media?

- it links domestic protests to the successful revolutions in Arab nations, and so links American protesters to those who fought to overrun oppressive regimes.

- it plays on our fantasies of the internet as a public sphere –a space in which all voices are equally heard.

- it romanticizes the protests. Social media is the “grass root” of our time, it is the symolic counter-point to ‘The System’ that protesters are fighting against.

- social media makes the experience hyper-real for each protester. By giving and amplifying individual voices, protesters are not just followers of the revolution, they are each revolutionaries. Moreover, as a matter of practice, this status as a revolutionary can be documented and publicized through status updates and tweets that call for action. Protesters can then truly see themselves in this glorified role, as they simultaneously project and come to know themselves through their social media reflections.

Article / Chinese city builds censorship-free Internet zone | Internet censorship and circumvention tools | Scoop.it
Surely the need for foreign businesses to work in China would force the Chinese government to do away with things like internet censorship? Hmm, not so much. The city of Chongqing has gotten around this problem by building a development zone with unrestricted internet access–for foreign businesses, that is.

SabzProxy is a free distributed Web proxy proposed by the Sabznameh.com team. The main improvement in SabzProxy, compared to PHProxy, is URL encoding. This makes SabzProxy harder to detect. Only deep-packet inspection would allow SabzProxy servers to be detected and blocked. http://htbic.org/sabzproxy

No one has done more to spread the gospel of anonymity than Appelbaum, whose day job is to serve as the public face of the Tor Project, a group that promotes Internet privacy through a software program invented 15 years ago by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He travels the world teaching spooks, political dissidents and human rights activists how to use Tor to prevent some of the world's most repressive regimes from tracking their movements online. He considers himself a freedom-of-speech absolutist.

Analysis / The Internet Freedom Fallacy and the Arab Digital activism. By Sami Ben Gharbia | Internet censorship and circumvention tools | Scoop.it
An extensive analysis by Tunisian activist Sami Ben Gharbia on the USamerican defense of freedom of the internet implications for grassroots organizations and activists on the ground.

"If the U.S. and other Western governments want to support Internet Freedom they should start by prohibiting the export of censor wares and other filtering software to our countries. After all, most of the tools used to muzzle our online free expression and monitor our activities on the Internet are being engineered and sold by American and Western corporations. The other problem is that the U.S. and other Western governments are not challenged from the inside about their policy. "

Inside the 'Arab Spring' - Features - Al Jazeera English | Internet censorship and circumvention tools | Scoop.it
The role of the internet in the Tunisian revolution, and building the spirit of protest and change, is the work of at least a decade. After the blocking of the first Tunisian websites in late 1990s, Tunisian activists who then became bloggers, were engaged in defending online freedom of expression. They were very creative in using technology in countering the propaganda of the state and to raise their hands against the lies and the corrupted system.

How To / Security in-a-box, by Tactical Technology Collective @info_activism | Internet censorship and circumvention tools | Scoop.it
Advocates and human rights defenders are increasingly concerned about their digital security, and with good reason. While computers and the internet can be extremely powerful tools for advocacy, they also present new risks for a group that is already, in many cases, quite vulnerable.

As more advocates have begun to rely on digital technology to achieve their outreach, data-collection, information design, communication and mobilisation objectives, these risks have become more severe.

An English and Thai speaking blog by a leading freedom of speech activist in Thailand :

"The trouble is, most people equate voting with democracy. It is actually only a small part of our democratic duties as citizens and govt’s (long forgotten) democratic responsibilities to us.

It’s been a really long time since we had any kind of meaningful election in Thailand. Think about it: Have you ever heard of any candidates who were, say, poor? Certainly not, in any country, and—SURPRISE!– they all seem to get much, much richer in office."
