If only advertisers and agencies had a TV-styleGross Rating Points (GRP) metric - not just impression and clickthrough levels - to gauge the effectiveness of their spend, then traditional TV ad dollars would flow more freely into online video campaigns. Inevitably, the online measurement discussion focuses on Nielsen, the undisputed king of TV ratings, whose measurement standard is the common currency for billions in brand advertising dollars."

Nielsen's Online Campaign Ratings (OCR) for use by their clients in campaign planning and analysis is a big milestone. As Amit Seth, Nielsen's EVP of Global Media Products explained to me late yesterday, these new partners will help cement OCR as an "online GRP" helping them to establish accountability and ROI quantification, two pre-requisites for traditional TV advertisers. 

Online video content providers are mostly dependent on advertising, which in turn explains why the industry's development can not be underestimated. Nielsen has often been the industry's pinata, accused of not moving fast enough. However, as OCR gains momentum, there is good reason for optimism about a healthy online video ad ecosystem.

Just 16% of North American B2B marketers say that their prospect data is accurate, reliable and comprehensive, with 79% admitting it needs improvement, details the CMO Council in a new report [download page]. Part of the problem seems to be that a plurality 24% update their data resources only periodically, with few doing so constantly in real-time (17%) or daily (14%). Marketers may have difficulty updating data more than periodically, given that they are drawing on a wide variety of sources.

Mr. Brule talks about his new broadcast operations that it becomes clear that he is an equal-opportunity media aesthete. "No one builds radio studios like this anymore," he says. "Everything is just plastic and glass, but ours are lined in proper audio fabric from Denmark. Monocle 24 will sound like radio probably used to sound -- it won't be tinny, it's going to be very bassy. I think we've built the two most handsome wool-lined studios in the world."
