elearnspace › Preparing for the Digital University

elearnspace › Preparing for the Digital University | Instructional Design for Higher Education | Scoop.it

"We’ve released a new report: Preparing for the Digital University: a review of the history and current state of distance, blended, and online learning (.pdf). The report is an attempt to reposition the narrative of digital learning away from “look, my cool new technology does this” to something more like “here’s what we know from research and here’s what we can extrapolate”. Innovation is a bunnies and kittens type of concept – who could possibly oppose it? Sometimes new is not better, especially when it impacts the lives of people. Remember the failure of Udacity and San Jose State University project? Even passing familiarity with research in learning sciences could have anticipated the need for scaffolded social support..."

Creating a Sense of Connection: Online Education in the Modern Era

Creating a Sense of Connection: Online Education in the Modern Era | Instructional Design for Higher Education | Scoop.it

"...The limits of the traditional approach are leading more students than ever to choose online learning that fits their busy lives. Online learning also has its own drawbacks, such as the potential to feel isolated as a student. One university has found ways to create community among students from all walks of life by connecting them with faculty, fellow students and alumni...Western Governors University created an online learning model that places student success at the center of all decisions. This includes efforts to ensure students are supported and connected to the university. Because WGU focuses on serving working adults..."

CTL - Regent Univ.'s insight:

The best online classes are more than correspondence courses. Well-designed online courses build communities of inquiry where, as Garrison et al. write, students will find cognitive, teaching and social presence working together to provide them a successful learning experience.

(My) Three Principles of Effective Online Pedagogy

As the recipient of the 2003 Sloan-C award for Excellence in Online Teaching, I have been invited to share some of my thoughts regarding effective online pedagogy. I am nothing if not a teacher, and as such, I am honored—both by the recognition that accompanies this wonderful award, and by the opportunity to share my thoughts about asynchronous teaching and learning with my colleagues.

CTL - Regent Univ.'s insight:

6 Types of Blended Learning

6 Types of Blended Learning | Instructional Design for Higher Education | Scoop.it

"Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity...[This] infographic takes a different approach to the concept, labeling it “Disruptive,” and even offering an interesting matrix. One interesting prediction? By 2014, 50% of all post-secondary learners will take a class online..." --Terry Heick

"The Advantages of Not Multi-Tasking" - HigherEdJobs | Instructional Design for Higher Education | Scoop.it

"Although I did turn off my cell phone, I attended the recent ACUHO-I conference session eating my yogurt and drinking a cup of coffee as I was taking notes on why most people are not efficient at multi-tasking. This is why I'm sharing tips from the presentation: "I'm Really Good at Multi-tasking" - No You Are Not!

"Many people feel that if they multi-task, they can be more efficient and effective. However, the truth is that most people don't do it well and often times the quality of each task completed may decrease. As discussed by the presenter..." --Kelly A. Cherwin

verstelle's curator insight, February 6, 2013 4:00 AM

"Coursera and its kin have offered hundreds of other courses that went off just fine. One reason that this class's failure has resonated so widely—aside from the obvious irony—may be that we're in the early stages of a backlash to the MOOC craze that swept the higher-education world over the past year. Top universities have been leaping on board left and right to avoid being left behind as the bandwagon pulls away, and it's no wonder that some skeptics want to throw the brakes before the free-classes trend careens out of control."
