Engagement is the key to working with "difficult" students.  Regardless of age, we all work better when we see the relevance of a task (or learning), and if we have some input for how it is done.  Providing students with options, and appealing to their interests isn't "giving in", it's "getting them in", and isn't that what we really need for them to succeed?
