Beth Dichter's curator insight, May 21, 2015 6:32 AM

Jackie Gerstein has a number of posts that look at the Maker Movement, and in this post she discusses looks at two issues within the movement that have come to her attention through social media (quoted from post):

* Maker movement initiatives are often driven by more affluent white males.

* The maker movement is too often being associated with the tech stuff – Arduinos, Littlebits, Makey-Makeys – stuff that less affluent schools and community programs can afford.

Gerstein shares evidence that addresses each of these issues and then moves on to discuss how we can provide learners with maker opportunities at minimal costs. This portion of the post is divided into three sections:

* Changing Perceptions about Stuff

* Changing Perceptions about What Activities are Considered Making

* Changing Perceptions: Making is about a Mindset and a Process Not About Stuff

Her bottom line, let's focus on the act of making. If you are considering adding a maker corner to your classroom next year, or have the opportunity to work with learners this summer and would like them to become a part of the maker movement, take the time to peruse this post.

Teacher 's guide on creating Personal Learning Networks | PLN | PKM

Teacher 's guide on creating Personal Learning Networks | PLN | PKM | Inspired thoughts on education and culture | Scoop.it

As social media become more and more predominant as platforms of connection and collaboration, the need for creating and maintaining a PLN ( Personal/Professional Learning Network ) becomes more pressing. As teachers and educators we are expected to be on top of the latest trends that can inform and enhance our classroom teaching as well as our professional growth.We are also expected to know the web tools that our students use and the new ones we can use with them in the future;  but this is not always possible and  because not all of our time constraints it becomes difficult to keep up the the new releases . It is at times  like these that you can call upon your PLN.

Ellen Dougherty's curator insight, August 1, 2015 11:52 AM

If you were to put together 12 rules that make a teacher a great teacher what would they include? Sit back and think about that, and then look at this post by Terry Heick, where he shares the rules he has come up with as well as the reasons for the rule. A few are listed above, and three more are below.

* Start small.

* In learning, curiosity is everything.

* Help students ask great questions.

Click through to the post to read through all his rules and find a bonus of three additional rules that you may want to add. You will also find links for resources for three of the rules.
