When You're Feeling Uninspired

When You're Feeling Uninspired | Inspiration for Writers | Scoop.it
I'm not feeling particularly inspired today. I don't even want to write anything on this blog. I've learned two vital lessons about what to do at times like these when I'm feeling uninspired.
Kim K.'s insight:

I like the distinction between being blocked and being empty.  Sometimes, it's your internal procrastinator that is getting in the way of writing.  But sometimes, you just need to refresh your mind and spirit and do something else.  Life is important for writing.

How to Get Rid of Writer’s Block, Pixar Style

How to Get Rid of Writer’s Block, Pixar Style | Inspiration for Writers | Scoop.it
"When you’re stuck," said writers at Pixar, "make a list of what WOULDN'T happen next. Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up."
Kim K.'s insight:

Writer's block means something a little different to everyone. For some people, it's a fear (often of being judged).  For some, it's more of procrastination.  Some people just don't believe it exists.  To me, writer's block is running out of creative energy and becoming frustrated.  Frustration can completely kill my ability to put words on the page.

This short article focuses on moving past a block in your story.  If you can't figure out what is happening next, try this out.  This is one of the simplest ideas that I've seen, but it makes a lot of sense!

About a little thing called 750 Words

Kim K.'s insight:

Inspiration often comes from practice.  Writing every day can help you find ideas and hone your skills.  This website is a very simple concept - write 750 words a day.  It will track your steaks and give you data about your writing, plus email you reminders to sit down and write.

There are countless ways you can use 750 Words to improve and inspire your writing.  I will often use it as a morning brainstorming session.  I'll write out all my fears and stress about whatever project I'm working on, but then I will jot down ideas and rough plans for topics I want to cover.

Getting in the habit of writing is one of the best things I've done to help my writing career.  There are countless ways you can use a site like this.  It can be a diary, the draft of your novel, or a place to free-flow ideas as they come.

Kim K.'s insight:

I think my favorite item on this list is "don't self-punish," which is something I fall into a lot.  If I don't write (or I feel like what I'm working on isn't very good), I can get frustrated and hard on myself.  It doesn't really solve anything to treat myself badly and tends to spiral into a cycle of tough writing days.

How to Write Fiction: Why Learning to Write Fiction is Important | WritersDigest.com

How to Write Fiction: Why Learning to Write Fiction is Important | WritersDigest.com | Inspiration for Writers | Scoop.it
Let author James Scott Bell explain why learning the how-tos of writing fiction is not only important, but essential to getting published.
Kim K.'s insight:

I've heard a lot of people say that you can't teach someone to write fiction.  Like the author of this post, I think that's BS!  We all have an inherent inspiration and creativity, and you can learn to tap into it, plus you have to learn the skills of fiction (plot, pacing, character development, etc).  While there are some people who seem to be naturally gifted storytellers, most of us have to learn a lot to write great fiction.

The Pomodoro Technique®

The Pomodoro Technique® | Inspiration for Writers | Scoop.it
Kim K.'s insight:

I've been using the Pomodoro Technique to help with my productivity for a long time.  One of the hardest things about being a full-time writer, for me, is keeping myself focused while working at home.  After all, there always seems to be something else to do (or a social media site to check).

This technique uses a timer to keep you focused.  You work for 25 minutes, you take a five minute break.  This will help with eyestrain issues caused by time on the computer, and give you a focused period of time for working.  But, you will know that your next break isn't too far away!
