Smurfs Take Over Sony Animation: Interview with voice actor extraordinaire Hank Azaria & actor Jayma Mays | MovieWeb

Smurfs Take Over Sony Animation: Interview with voice actor extraordinaire Hank Azaria & actor Jayma Mays | MovieWeb | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Don't let the title scare you away. Hank Azaria ("Gargamel") actually shares some interesting insights into how he goes about creating characters for "The Simpsons," "Smurfs" and other character-driven projects. (I was surprised that the studio actually let him say that he didn't like Paul Winchell's original portrayal of "Gargamel.")

MovieWeb: "Do you get physical when you're doing The Simpsons too?

Hank Azaria: "Yes. You can't do it and not be physical, but not as much as this. I'm enjoying this new world. The prosthetics aren't that new, but the CGI world like they did in Alice in Wonderland or Avatar, to become a living cartoon, I like that whole idea. Once you create the voice, you can literally become a new character on film."

Why Haven't I Heard from my Agent? | Daily Actor | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
This article is geared primarily towards on-camera actors, BUT there are ideas in here that voice actors should take and run with...like putting in the time and effort necessary to build up your list of industry contacts. Who do you know? What if you dedicated more time and effort into meeting more casting directors; broadcast, corporate and ad agency producers; and audio designers at game companies? It certainly couldn't hurt...

Daily Actor:"Sitting back and waiting for your agent to do 90% of the work is a guarantee of failure. You have to do 90% of marketing YOU- selling you- getting the industry- EVERYBODY- to know you. (and love you=requesting you!)"

Are voiceovers better off working at McDonald's? | Piehole UK | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Good post. Does a good job spelling out why you shouldn't work for a ridiculously low rate---not only are you hurting yourself, but all other voice actors, as well. (FYI, 16.50 British Pounds for voice a radio commercial equals $26.40 USD.)

Piehole UK: "Of course there is always going to be some VO willing to do a once-off job for 16 pounds… that’s OK, let them have it. But it’s important to walk away from those jobs, because they just drive the price down for VOs everywhere. It’s a race to the bottom and everyone loses."

Why You Should Take Some Time To Research Freelance Voiceover Job Opportunities Before You Audition| Voices.com

Why You Should Take Some Time To Research Freelance Voiceover Job Opportunities Before You Audition| Voices.com | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Voices.com has posted a good article today on why it is wise to take the time to check out a client before auditioning for them, and avoid jobs that don't "smell" or "feel" right to you. BUT it's also important to understand that this advice applies primarily to those FREELANCE voiceover jobs that you find on your own---without an agent--- through sites like Voices.com, Voice123 or craigslist.

While it's perfectly acceptable to pass occasionally on an audition sent to you by your agent (e.g., a political ad for a position or candidate you genuinely oppose), you don't want to do this too frequently, otherwise your agent might stop sending you auditions altogether. As a rule, you should assume that any auditions sent to you by your agent have already been vetted to make sure that the client is legitimate and creditworthy. If your agent seems to be sending you too many auditions that seem questionable or downright shady, you probably need to find yourself another agent.

Movie geeks/film critics/bloggers, Joe and Chris of the weekly "Film Yap" podcast discuss voice acting, and what, in their opinion, makes a vocal performance in a film great. They also wade into the "celebrity" vs. working actor debate.

It's interesting to hear voiceover and voice acting discussed at length by people who are somewhat knowledgeable, but completely outside of the industry. While they get a few minor details wrong, for the most part, I actually agree with much of their analysis and observations ...

If you're traveling anywhere, you need to read this STAT! Turns out that when you get on a plane or check into a hotel, you should take some extra precautionary steps, e.g., keeping super-hydrated, to make sure that your voice and all the rest of you stays healthy.

Online Voice Coaching: "Breathing dry, re-circulated air is a special threat for your voice...But even a short flight for as little as two hours can wreak havoc on your throat because on a plane you lose eight ounces of water by skin evaporation every hour. This means when you fly from New York to L.A. you will lose forty ounces of water through your skin alone. That’s as much as running an hour in 90-degree heat!"

Should You Change Your Voiceover Demo? | Sound Advice

Should You Change Your Voiceover Demo? | Sound Advice | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
If your demo is getting you a lot of work and it's the type of work you want, don't mess with it.. "Updating" your demo may actually do you more harm than good...

I actually saw this happen on several occasions when I was running an online casting site, so I can vouch that "new and improved" is not necessarily always a good thing when it comes to demos.

SOUND ADVICE: "...did the demo draw in the auditions? Chances are that’s the case. If so… DON’T change a thing on your site or your demos...Your site, like your demos (as ALL your promo) should offer potential clients what you do best… and what you want more of. (In fact, I consider this to be the definition of a truly effective voiceover demo.)"
