Pros and Cons of Technology for Children - Carte Blanche | Inquiry Learning, Youth, Popular Culture & Texts | Scoop.it
Our children are growing up in the most technologically advanced age to date – screens are everywhere and children see their parents using them all the time. But, according to experts, the old wives’ tale of ‘square eyes’ from too much television is the least of a modern parent’s concerns.   Many parents can probably …

How Kids Lose Their Creativity As They Age (And How To Prevent It)

How Kids Lose Their Creativity As They Age (And How To Prevent It) | Inquiry Learning, Youth, Popular Culture & Texts | Scoop.it
Ever since the 1950s, children have undergone a test for tracking their creativity, in similar fashion to the IQ test. Professor E. Paul Torrance developed the series of tasks, which are administered by a psychologist, to a subject to measure the person’s ability to produce something original and useful. No [...]
Megan G's insight:
This is a really thought provoking article. It discusses how today, we live in a world of dizzying speed, exponential complexity, and ruthless competition. We can no longer rely on the models of the past in order to win. Today, we need an entirely new approach - Teaching Maths in a creative and inquiry way. Linker talks about how children are being taught that to be good at Maths it is all about a final mark on a test paper, however this is causing huge effects on the imaginations and creativity of our young children.

This is very helpful in relation to my primary question as it discusses that we need to start teaching Maths and subjects in a more creative and inquiry way to spark children's imaginations before they are lost entirely.

What is inquiry learning?

What is inquiry learning? | Inquiry Learning, Youth, Popular Culture & Texts | Scoop.it
In a previous post, I described inquiry learning as comprising three elements: 1)  questioning frameworks 2)  information literacy / information seeking  process 3)  an action research cycle My conclusion was that these three elements define inquiry learning and separate it from related concepts such as information literacy.  My choice of foregrounding these elements is based on my…

Dr Mandy Lupton is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the Queensland University of Technology. She coordinates and teaches units in the Master of Education (Teacher-Librarianship) course. This blog gives a fantastic overview of Inquiry Learning for people who are being exposed to the concept or just perhaps need a brain refresher.

The website is clearly set out and consists of many Archive Blogs and Publications which assists educators in the teaching and knowledge of Inquiry learning. This really helped me before I started my initial search as it provided me with enough background information to feel confident in the meaning, frameworks and strategies behind Inquiry Learning.

Periscope: Connecting Classrooms to the World | Inquiry Learning, Youth, Popular Culture & Texts | Scoop.it
Through the Periscope app, students can take virtual field trips, observe demos, and collaborate. Parents can find greater involvement in their children's learning and school community.
Megan G's insight:
Wow. This article was particularly close to me as it not only details how Technology is helping children around the world, but also bringing hope to remote communities. It is about a new FREE App that allows students in remote places in countries such as Asia, Australia and Africa and it brings the world to them. It enables the children to talk to people around the world and learn about their cultures, what they are learning about and how they live around the world and learn about their cultures and what they are learning about.

It also gives them the opportunity to experience world famous museums and famous sites around the world. Something I wil look more into. This site makes it onto my Curation as it is a really big ‘feel good’ article that shows the benefits of technology in the classroom today by allowing students to explore and question the world they live in no matter where they are.

Five Critical Skills to Empower Students in the Digital Age

Five Critical Skills to Empower Students in the Digital Age | Inquiry Learning, Youth, Popular Culture & Texts | Scoop.it
Using the first five days of school to teach learning skills that will be used throughout the course is a great way to start the new school year.
Megan G's insight:
Another fantastic article that has been written and published on the KQED website. The reason I found this article worthy of curation is because it not only is based around my initial question of Technology but also integrates and talks about student self-efficacy in relation to using different digital platforms to express their views. This article is based around Minecraft which is particularly helpful to me because my Grade 3 boys are using Minecraft at the moment, integrated with Maths.

The reason it is based around self-efficacy is because it explains how it is very important to make sure students can express themselves through a variety of different social platforms and to do this, they need to be taught a range of ideas. If they have the choice in how they can present and display their work, their confidence and excitement grows. This is where I come in!

It also talks about the importance of giving students examples of other students work to build their confidence and also so they know what is expected of them and what the final product looks like. A very helpful resource for an IT teacher or a teacher looking at utilising ICT in their lessons.

Carol Kuhlthau - Information Search Process

Carol Kuhlthau - Information Search Process | Inquiry Learning, Youth, Popular Culture & Texts | Scoop.it
Carol Collier Kuhlthau is Professor Emerita of Library and Information Science at Rutgers University where she directed the graduate program in school librarianship that has been rated number one in the country by U.S. News.

She is internationally known for her groundbreaking research on the Information Search Process and for the ISP model of affective, cognitive and physical aspects in six stages of information seeking and use.
Megan G's insight:
I could not create a Curation without acknowledging how much Kuhlthau's framework has helped me throughout this journey. Her ISP (Information Search Process) of 6 stages has really helped me guide my learning and take me step-by-step through my journey. There were a lot of feelings, thought and actions that took place through this journey and if it wasn't for Carol's guidance through her framework, which outlines what each step entails, I would have felt quite lost.
