The L.A. Public Library Is About to Start Offering High School Diplomas

The L.A. Public Library Is About to Start Offering High School Diplomas | innovative libraries | Scoop.it
Not GEDs. Diplomas.

The library hopes to grant high school diplomas to 150 adults in the first year at a cost to the library of $150,000, Szabo said. Many public libraries offer programs to prepare students and in some cases administer the General Educational Development test, which for decades was the brand name for the high school equivalency exam. But Szabo believes this is the first time a public library will be offering an accredited high school diploma to adult students, who will take courses online but will meet at the library for assistance and to interact with fellow adult learners.

A New Report from YASLA: “The Future of Library Services For and With Teens: A Call to Action” | LJ INFOdocket | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

“This report provides a roadmap for the library community for working with teens,” said Shannon Peterson, YALSA President. “It explains the shift occurring, what our core missions and values must be, and provides recommended strategies for moving forward into the future.”

The report is a call to action for the library community.  It provides recommendations on how libraries must address challenges and re-envision their teen services in order to meet the needs of their individual communities and to collectively ensure that the nation’s 40+ million teens develop the skills they need to be productive citizens.  By acting on this call, the library community can work within their own local communities to create the kind of spaces, services and opportunities that today’s teens need in order to succeed in school and in life.

3. 3D printing and Makerspaces

4. Embedded Librarianship

5. More of What We're Doing Now

Trudy Raymakers's insight:

All five possible futures are valuable. The article doesn't make clear if you have to choose or go for all the possibilities.

Editorial: A new ‘open library’ concept | Scandinavian Library Quarterly

Editorial: A new ‘open library’ concept | Scandinavian Library Quarterly | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

In striving for new public library concepts we see many fancy ideas presented. One of the most successful results in Denmark is the ‘open library’ concept. And use the computers, read or maybe even set up a meeting or an event, if the space allows it.
