Strange, Beautiful and Unexpected: Planned Cities Seen From Space | Wired Science | Wired.com | Innovation gems | Scoop.it

Most planned cities probably aren't built with the view from space in mind, but some of them create incredible patterns on the landscape that can only be truly appreciated from above. Planned cities are laid out all at once and built from scratch.

When smartphone apps play doctor

When smartphone apps play doctor | Innovation gems | Scoop.it

Is Ibiza’s hedonistic Ushuaia Hotel the most hi-tech on the planet? | Innovation gems | Scoop.it

This is Ibiza, more specifically Ushuaia – a hedonistic hotel like no other that’s staking a claim to be the world’s techiest.

Big Data: The Ultimate Medical Textbook

Big Data: The Ultimate Medical Textbook | Innovation gems | Scoop.it
There is little doubt that data will drive both the delivery and improvement of healthcare in the future. “Big data” refers to datasets whose size is beyond the ability of typical database software tools to capture, store, manage, and analyze. It is intentionally subjective and is expected to grow over time. A study from the McKinsey Global Institute estimated that big data has$300 billion of potential added value to the US healthcare system. Finnish engineers used earth’s magnetic field for indoor map navigation

Finnish engineers used earth’s magnetic field for indoor map navigation | Innovation gems | Scoop.it
Indoor navigation is one of the last great technical problems that hasn’t been solved. Outdoor navigation can be tackled with satellite technology or cell phone triangulation. But those technologies can’t pinpoint somebody indoors.
But a crew of Finnish engineers have created a novel approach indoor positioning system (IPS) based on the earth’s magnetic field. They did so by studying homing pigeons and spiny lobsters and how they use cues from the magnetic fields, according to Phys.org.
