Gartner's Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends 2019

Blockchain, artificial intelligence, empowered edge, privacy and ethics, quantum computing, immersive experiences, augmented analytics, autonomous things and digital twins drive the Gartner Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2019.

 

David Cearley, Gartner Vice President, presented the trends at Gartner 2018 Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando, Florida.

Trend No. 1: Autonomous things

Whether it’s cars, robots or agriculture, autonomous things use AI to perform tasks traditionally done by humans. The sophistication of the intelligence varies, but all autonomous things use AI to interact more naturally with their environments.

Trend No. 2: Augmented analytics

Data scientists now have increasing amounts of data to prepare, analyze and group — and from which to draw conclusions. Given the amount of data, exploring all possibilities becomes impossible. This means businesses can miss key insights from hypotheses the data scientists don’t have the capacity to explore.

Trend No. 3: AI-driven development

AI-driven development looks at tools, technologies and best practices for embedding AI into applications and using AI to create AI-powered tools for the development process.

Trend No. 4: Digital twins

digital twin is a digital representation that mirrors a real-life object, process or system. Digital twins can also be linked to create twins of larger systems, such as a power plant or city. The idea of a digital twin is not new. The focus today is on digital twins in the IoT, which could improve enterprise decision making by providing information on maintenance and reliability, insight into how a product could perform more effectively, data about new products and increased efficiency.

Trend No. 5: Empowered edge

Edge computing is a topology where information processing and content collection and delivery are placed closer to the sources of the information, with the idea that keeping traffic local will reduce latency. Currently, much of the focus of this technology is a result of the need for IoT systems to deliver disconnected or distributed capabilities into the embedded IoT world. This type of topology will address challenges ranging from high WAN costs and unacceptable levels of latency. Further, it will enable the specifics of digital business and IT solutions.

Trend No. 6: Immersive technologies

Through 2028, conversational platforms, which change how users interact with the world, and technologies such as augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR), which change how users perceive the world, will lead to a new immersive experience. AR, MR and VR show potential for increased productivity, with the next generation of VR able to sense shapes and track a user’s position and MR enabling people to view and interact with their world. 

Trend No. 7: Blockchain

Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger, an expanding chronologically ordered list of cryptographically signed, irrevocable transactional records shared by all participants in a network. Blockchain allows companies to trace a transaction and work with untrusted parties without the need for a centralized party (i.e., a bank). This greatly reduces business friction and has applications that began in finance, but have expanded to government, healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain and others. Blockchain could potentially lower costs, reduce transaction settlement times and improve cash flow. The technology has also given way to a host of blockchain-inspired solutions that utilize some of the benefits and parts of blockchain.

Trend No. 8: Smart spaces

A smart space is a physical or digital environment in which humans and technology-enabled systems interact in increasingly open, connected, coordinated and intelligent ecosystems. As technology becomes a more integrated part of daily life, smart spaces will enter a period of accelerated delivery. Further, other trends such as AI-driven technology, edge computing, blockchain and digital twins are driving toward this trend as individual solutions become smart spaces.

Trend No. 9: Digital ethics and privacy

Consumers have an growing awareness of the value of their personal information, and they are increasingly concerned with how it’s being used by public and private entities. Enterprises that don’t pay attention are at risk of consumer backlash.

Trend No. 10: Quantum computing

Quantum computing is a type of nonclassical computing that is based on the quantum state of subatomic particles that represent information as elements denoted as quantum bits or “qubits.” Quantum computers are an exponentially scalable and highly parallel computing model.  A way to imagine the difference between traditional and quantum computers is to imagine a giant library of books. While a classic computer would read every book in a library in a linear fashion, a quantum computer would read all the books simultaneously. Quantum computers are able to theoretically work on millions of computations at once. Quantum computing in the form of a commercially available, affordable and reliable service would transform some industries.

Sequencing tumor genes and then selecting treatments that target certain mutations is routine in the treatment of several tumor types, including breast and lung cancer. But it’s not common practice for treating hematological malignancies like multiple myeloma, even though oncologists who treat those diseases are well aware that each patient’s cancer has unique characteristics that may make it more or less responsive to certain targeted treatments.  Oncologist Samir Parekh and his colleagues at the Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine in New York wanted to change the treatment paradigm in multiple myeloma. So they developed a system that uses an algorithm to match up multiple myeloma patients with drugs that are already on the market to treat other cancers. They tried the resulting recommendations in a group of 21 patients with treatment-resistant multiple myeloma and got positive results in all but five—a response rate that’s so high Parekh believes the idea could be extended to many other cancers.  “The response was quite amazing, considering this was a challenging population that had pretty much failed every treatment out there,” says Parekh, director of translational research in myeloma at Mount Sinai. The study was published yesterday in the journal JCO Precision Oncology.   The technique that Parekh’s team employed is often called “multi-omics.” That means they didn’t just use genomic sequencing to scour the DNA of the patients’ cancers for targetable mutations, but they also sequenced their RNA. Because RNA plays a major role in the coding and expression of genes, it can also drive cancer, so they were confident the information they gleaned would point them to targets that might respond to existing drugs.  Problem was, they needed a supercomputer to produce all that data quickly, but they didn’t want to have to wait in line to access the shared technology that academic institutions like Mount Sinai generally use. “In myeloma, when patients relapse, we typically have a few days to a couple of weeks before we need to decide on a treatment,” Parekh says. “Otherwise the patients progress.”

Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential to transform aviation/aerospace industry by creating new mixed reality worlds that serve as a medium for gaining work-related skills.  Augmented Reality for Aircraft Maintenance

  • Aviation maintenance facilities for general, commercial, and governmental organizations operate, inspect, and maintain complex aircraft structures and systems with many highly interrelated components.
  • An AR system has the potential to enable job task training and job task guidance for the novice technician in a real-world environment.
  • An AR system could reduce the cost for training and retraining of AMTs by complementing human information processing and assisting with performance of job tasks.
  • An AR system could eliminate the need to leave the aircraft for the retrieval of information from maintenance manuals for inspection and repair procedures.

  Virtual Reality for Airport Security and Safety Training

  • Traditional collaborative training is both resource intensive and time-consuming.
  • With a busy airport, it’s not feasible to practice where the actual disaster response would take place.
  • In using a virtual facsimile of any Airport, trainees can practice their emergency procedures on a real facility.
  • The logistical and response challenges present in the real environment translates to the virtual giving trainees a chance to perform as they would in real life.
Augmented Reality for Aircraft Windshields  Augmented Reality services enhance the pilots’ ability to visualize terrain, navigation, traffic, weather, and airspace along with convenience and safety items like an emergency, preflight, in-flight, and landing checklists (without the need for pilots to take their eyes off the sky, and access multiple screens and devices).
