Seven Good Reasons Not to Innovate

Seven Good Reasons Not to Innovate | Innovating to what's next... | Scoop.it
If you want to stop your organisation from trying to develop significant new products or services, then here are seven solid arguments you can rely on. We are successful. We are growing and making a modest profit. Innovations absorb resources and cost money. Why should we distract ourselves and mess with success? Everyone is very busy. All staff are working hard on urgent tasks sorting out today’s problems. They do not have spare bandwidth to experiment with new ideas. Innovation is risky. Most radical innovations fail, so let’s just keep making our current products and services better. We don’t like failure. It would be bad for morale if we launched a new product which flopped - and it would be bad for the careers of those who were responsible for failure. We tried it before and it did not work. Last year we spent a lot of time and money on a major new venture which never made a profit and had to be discontinued. It was a painful and costly experience. Customers are not asking for

Everyone Is Seeking Disruption. Here's Why Your Growth Will Come From Something Else | Innovating to what's next... | Scoop.it

When you are considering entering a new market, you may be looking for your way to disrupt and create your competitive advantage. But disruption isn't always the answer -- it's only half of the puzzle. The other half is a non-disruptive creation that is based on value.

Beeyond's insight:

Developing new technologies to create disruption is not trivial. The right business model that creates cash flow takes time and a bit of luck. Most companies will bleed money before finding the right mix of technology and business model when focused on disruption.

Hermès has a “secret” special projects division. Little-known, highly under-reported, Le Sur-Mesure is a division of the 180-plus year old luxury goods house that endeavors to bring the world’s wealthiest consumers’ “wildest dreams to life.” For some, that has been custom boxing gloves crafted entirely by Hermès, or maybe custom chairs for a private jet. For another, it is the cabin of a 68-foot sailboat, something that Hermès' artisans are currently working on in its workshop in France.

Steven Yang quit his job at Google in the summer of 2011 to build the products he felt the world needed: a line of reasonably priced accessories that would be better than the ones you could buy from Apple and other big-name brands. Easy Method of Separating Chiral Drug Molecules Discovered

Easy Method of Separating Chiral Drug Molecules Discovered | Innovating to what's next... | Scoop.it

Here, we show experimentally that the interaction of chiral molecules with a perpendicularly magnetized substrate is enantiospecific. Thus, one enantiomer adsorbs preferentially when the magnetic dipole is pointing up, whereas the other adsorbs faster for the opposite alignment of the magnetization. The interaction is not controlled by the magnetic field per se, but rather by the electron spin orientations, and opens prospects for a distinct approach to enantiomeric separations.
