OK, it's time to come clean - time to admit an error of judgement. It's a mistake I made almost six months ago, but one that still haunts me as I write this latest Week in Geek blog...

I hated on Arrow.

As a huge comic book fan - and, in particular, an admirer of DC Comics' emerald archer - I had high hopes for Arrow when it first premiered back in October 2012.

Smallville had never really clicked with me, but here was a show being pitched as "sophisticated and edgy" - a far cry from the Technicolor emo action of its predecessor on The CW.

When I finally saw the Arrow pilot though, I was disappointed, calling the finished product "melodramatic" and arguing that it "lack[ed] substance". In short, I was not kind.

In my defence, my take on the pilot wasn't entirely wrong. I'm now a fully paid-up member of the Arrow fan club, but I've come to love the show not only because of a shift in my own expectations, but because the series as a whole has vastly improved since its early outings.

Don't believe me? Then just ask the main man himself, Stephen Amell, who in a recent interview told Entertainment Weekly: "I went back recently and watched our fifth episode, and I liked it. But it's nothing compared to what we're doing now. It feels like a completely different show."
