Predicting Pragmatic Reasoning in Formal Models

Predicting Pragmatic Reasoning in Formal Models | Influence Analysis | Scoop.it

"One of the most astonishing features of human language is its capacity to convey information efficiently in context. Many theories provide informal accounts of communicative inference, yet there have been few successes in making precise, quantitative predictions about pragmatic reasoning. We examined judgments about simple referential communication games, modeling behavior in these games by assuming that speakers attempt to be informative and that listeners use Bayesian inference to recover speakers’ intended referents. Our model provides a close, parameter-free fit to human judgments, suggesting that the use of information-theoretic tools to predict pragmatic reasoning may lead to more effective formal models of communication."

Turns out I'm not crazy

Turns out I'm not crazy | Influence Analysis | Scoop.it

"When you're dealing with a big established thing like the google ngram corpus, you figure it's going to be pretty much pristine. That's at least what I thought, so when I was pulling non-trigrams from a trigram file, and non-bigrams from a bigram file, I assumed my processing procedure was subtly messed up.

So I stared at my processing scripts for few days before finally investigating the google data itself. I'm now convinced that the problem is on their end. I probed into the bigram files of English One Million corpus, and found that there were a bunch of lines that weren't registering as containing bigrams."

Statistical Text Analysis Argues Story Trumps Language Rules

Statistical Text Analysis Argues Story Trumps Language Rules | Influence Analysis | Scoop.it

"Keywords convey the content of text, emerging from bursts of certain words, and illuminate relationships between sections of text distant from each other.

Eduardo Altmann and colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPIPKS) used statistical methods to study how letters and words correlate with the subject of a text.

The scientists employed statistical text analysis as an easy way of identifying the defining words of a given text. "By so doing, it is absolutely irrelevant which language the text is written in. The only thing that matters is the story and not language-specific rules," says Altmann. Their findings could be used in future to improve Internet search engines, and they could also help to analyse texts and identify plagiarism. They mathematically studied the semantic properties of texts by translating ten different English texts into various codes."

Please, No Text Mining Here

Please, No Text Mining Here | Influence Analysis | Scoop.it

"Publishers and professors are fighting over text mining. This is why. Ever wondered what happens to the millions of articles published yearly in academic journals? Who reads them, as horridly boring as they are? In the old days, before computers arrived on earth, Professor Naughty would imprison himself in a cold, dusty library reading room and flip through page after page of texts, tables of content, footnotes, etc. Well, these days there are extremely powerful computers that can do what’s called text mining. They can zap through gazillion amounts of content and find key patterns and connections. Text mining can be used for intelligence analysis, social media marketing—you name it. It’s simply a way to dig up and make sense of specific kinds of information buried within a pile of data."
