How the elevator transformed America - The Boston Globe

How the elevator transformed America - The Boston Globe | Industrialization Unit | Scoop.it
For most city-dwellers, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the passion that Americans afford trains, jets, and bicycles. But a small group of elevator experts consider this a travesty. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or residential high-rises, and city life as we know it would be impossible. Indeed, they argue, the elevator’s role in American history has been no less profound than that of the automobile. Today, as the world’s urban population explodes, and cities become denser, taller, and more crowded, America’s elevators are becoming more important than ever. And for the people who love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.

Barrett Baughn's curator insight, May 27, 2015 8:02 AM

This is a cool calculator that allows you to determine if you can live off minimum wage set on people by the US government. It allows you to put in all your bills, housing costs, etc. and what state your in and lets you see if you can make enough money while on minimum wage to survive. Today the minimum wage is very outdated and now many people are financially struggling because of it.

This is apart of the political and industrial units. It's apart of political because it's describing a political policy. It's also apart of the industrial unit because that is where cheap labor originated due to factories and they required a minimum amount of money to be paid by the hour.
