Good IAQ, an essential need in daily life! | indoor air pollution | Scoop.it

Air is a natural and necessary resource in our daily life.

Even though we forget its presence, air is essential as we need to breathe to stay alive.

You can survive for 6-8 weeks without eating, 3-5 days without drinking but just only a few minutes without breathing."

The basics: protect your home and family

The basics: protect your home and family | indoor air pollution | Scoop.it
Ventilate your home
Let fresh air in. Make sure you have enough fresh air coming into your home. The consumer publications on ventilation from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation are a good source of advice.
Use a fan. Exhaust fans that vent to the outside should be installed in bathrooms and above stoves to remove moisture and pollutants produced indoors. Make sure to turn them on when showering and cooking, especially if you are frying or boiling water.
Open windows. Open windows when using products that may release chemicals into the air, such as when you are painting, varnishing or installing new carpets.
Go low. Choose low-emission paints, varnishes, glues, wood furniture, and building products. Look for an independent certification label to help you select low-emission products (like the EcoLogo program that sets standards for sustainable products).

Get out the disinfectant! - YouTube

An everyday cleaner does not kill bacteria and viruses. In fact, using an everyday cleaner and a cleaning rag or sponge, you could simply be spreading the germs around. That is why the final step in any cleanup - and a great thing to do between cleanups - is to get out the disinfectant.

Disinfectants containing natural ingredient such as thyme essential oil and citric acid exist on the market and can kill 99.9% of the germs in your home without exposing yourself and your children to dangerous chemicals.

Particulate Matter - Indoor Air Quality | indoor air pollution | Scoop.it
However, some homes do have significant sources of indoor particulate matter which come from the following sources:

Cigarette smoking is the greatest single source of particulate matter in homes and buildings where people smoke;
Cooking: especially frying and sautéing;
Malfunctioning combustion appliances: for example, furnaces without a proper air filter;
Non-vented combustion appliances like gas stoves;
Wood-burning appliances like wood stoves and fireplaces: especially if the smoke leaks or backdrafts into the home; and
Mould growth.
