The Scottish media and half-truths about Scotland, Catalonia and the EU

The Scottish media and half-truths about Scotland, Catalonia and the EU | Independence movements | Scoop.it

On Tuesday the Scotsman newspaper reported that Joaquin Alumnia, vice-president of the European Commission, had warned that an independent Catalonia would be forced out of the EU and would have to re-apply for membership, the paper implied this would also apply to Scotland.

David Macgille-Mhuire's insight:

Pen and Sword Books: Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet by Chris Paton

Pen and Sword Books: Tracing Your Irish Family History on the Internet by Chris Paton | Independence movements | Scoop.it
Ireland has probably experienced more tragedy when it comes to the preservation of resources for family historians than any other region of the British Isles.
David Macgille-Mhuire's insight:

Scottish and Irish familial and cultural connections stretch back for millennia - despite the attempts by the British state via sympathetic "historians" to re-write this narrative, and to politically and militarily divide and rule the Celtic "fringe". Thus, in many senses, Ireland's story is also Scotland's (and Wales's and Man's  and their "Wild Geese"  forced overseas). This legacy is also echoed in Brittany, Galicia, Catalunya, and the Basque Country where similar internal colonising states attempted, and still attempt, to eradicate whole peoples and cultures.

Ethnic cleansing of this kind is, therefore, still very much alive and kicking "minorities". This kind of historical record is consequently vital if only out of self-defense and setting the record straight; but, and perhaps more importantly, it is also crucial to an enlightened embrace of the future.

Scotland Tonight: SNP calls for inquiry into UK's drone policy | Independence movements | Scoop.it
The SNP has called for an inquiry into the UK's policy on drone strikes after two British jihadists were killed in Syria last month, including Ruhul Amin from Aberdeen.

On Wednesday, defence secretary Michael Fallon said the UK Government would not hesitate to repeat the action and further drone strikes against ISIL militants who plot to attack the UK could be launched.

Angus MacNeil MP - statement on Syria

Angus MacNeil MP - statement on Syria | Independence movements | Scoop.it
With the UK Parliament to be recalled tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss the current situation in Syria, Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil has said he is “almost certain to vote against war in the Commons”.
David Macgille-Mhuire's insight:

"[A]lmost certain to vote against war in the Commons"? I trust this will result in an absolute certainty come the vote and that he will vote No: Anything else is unacceptable. Indeed, the Scottish government and parliament should publicly disassociate themselves from any Westminster vote in favor of military intervention in Syria even though foreign policy and defence matters are reserved to the imploding UK parliament. To go further, and allowing for the patient statesmanship of the Scottish government in pursuit of a peaceful Scottish (re-)independence referendum, a democratic red-line will be crossed again (pace Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan), and the Scottish government and parliament would be unilaterally entitled to abrogate the Treaty of Union.
