Evacuation Path Analysis with Dynamo

Evacuation Path Analysis with Dynamo | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

More and more I’ve been challenged and inspired to find new ways to perform custom architectural analysis. In this post I want to share with you a short and simple (for once) Dynamo script that can be used to analyze the evacuation paths in your building design in Revit. The script (that you can download at the bottom of this post) will calculate the accumulated distance from several points to a selected emergency exit and display the results in a selected Revit view.

BIM Project Break Down | AUGI

BIM Project Break Down | AUGI | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

Owners, professional engineers, architects, and other stakeholders in the AEC industry are focused on Building Information Modeling (BIM).  They are often more concerned with what goes in models than the process of BIM.  In the end, a BIM process must be well managed to be successful. Putting more attention on management and less on modeling can have a high payoff.

Let’s explore the practice of BIM as it affects the entire lifecycle of a project.  BIM can be defined as how all stakeholders of a project contribute data from all perspectives into a process of design, construction, and management from inception to ownership utilizing powerful, adaptive software.

BIM can be broken down into key aspects of a project:

Information Gathering and Organizational Management

3D Modeling Management

Building Analysis Management

Time and Resource Management

Monetary Management

Construction Management

Building Lifecycle Management

Revit MEP Content: Build or Buy?

Revit MEP Content: Build or Buy? | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

According to Autodesk, BIM (Building Information Modeling) “is an intelligent model-based process that provides insight to help you plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure.”

Let’s focus on the intelligent model portion of BIM, it’s really the “I” (or Information) part of BIM.

It requires content to provide an LOD 400 level model and that goes for any BIM platform, not just Autodesk® Revit® MEP.

Now let’s talk the difference between Building and Buying content.

The Color Splasher is a tool by BIM One that allows rapid understanding of model information. It filters, selects and colors elements based on parameters values to help verify model data integrity and improve visualization of non-graphical data. The users first selects the desired category, then selects a parameter and, finally, set colors for each value of this parameter.

Real Life Perspective: Transitioning from AutoCAD to Revit | AUGI

Real Life Perspective: Transitioning from AutoCAD to Revit | AUGI | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

According to the fifth annual “SE BIM Survey,” conducted by the BIM committee of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and the Council of American Structural Engineers (CASE) with the Structural Engineers Association of Texas (SEAoT), 67 percent of respondents reported using BIM in their projects (Post, Nadine. “BIM Survey Says More Structural Engineers Use Building Information Modeling.” Engineering News-Record 12 May 2014. Print).  Who are the remaining 33 percent and what are their predominate reasons to resist BIM adoption?  Is it possible to convince these BIM holdouts to make the transition and catch up with the recent technological advancements of the AEC industry?  This article will attempt to diagnose the concerns of non-Revit users and provide real-world experience and advice to ease those concerns.

How to define BIM Use

How to define BIM Use | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

For those that don't know, a BIM Use is a task, outcome or deliverable that a BIM model is used for. For example when a BIM model is used for structural analysis, or to create a door schedule, or provide data for an FM system.

When talking about BIM Use we mean "Building Information Models" (actual digital models), not as in "Building Information Modelling" (BIM processes). Because of this some call it Model Use, but I shall stick to BIM Use, as there is a world beyond BIM with other types of models.

BIM Use is at the core of  BIM. The basic concept of BIM is that data created is captured in a form and format that can be directly used as a resource for other purposes.

So doors are created in such a way that a door schedule can be produced directly from those doors. That modelled structural elements behave in a way that allows for structural analysis...

Revit: Inserting Curtainwall Doors as Embedded Curtainwalls

Revit: Inserting Curtainwall Doors as Embedded Curtainwalls | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it
Revit handles curtainwall doors differently than it handles regular doors. Normal doors are Revit elements that require hosting by a standard wall. Curtainwall doors, however, are treated as curtainwall panels and substituted for a standard panel between curtain grids. When designing curtainwall doors, there can be an enormous number of frame and doors style combinations to consider and a CW door library containing all of those combinations can get quite large and time consuming to create.

Revit Tutorial - Site Designer Plugin

Revit Tutorial - Site Designer Plugin | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

I attended a class about the Site Designer Plugin by Dan Rosenberg during RTCNA this year for the simple reason of understanding how to get the damn tool to work!  For those of you who have attempted or used the Site Designer Plugin you may have found it to be anything but intuitive.  Well, Dan was able to break it down and make it at least work.  For that, I was glad I attended the class.

The concept behind the Site Designer plugin is fantastic.  The ability to make accurate (looking) roads, sidewalks, and curbs that automatically follow your toposurface is a no-brainer.

During the session Dan mentioned he had created a series of videos about the Site Designer tool and asked that we share them.  Well, I decided to post them here for you!

New standards for building documentation including 3D imaging and Level of Accuracy released

New standards for building documentation including 3D imaging and Level of Accuracy released | IN MY OPINION | Scoop.it

In 2012 the U.S. Institute of Building Documentation(USIBD) was founded to bring together the various stakeholder groups (owner/operators, architects, engineers, contractors, surveyors, brokers, and others) to promote and facilitate building documentation as a distinct industry; establishing standards, guidelines and best practices to foster excellence in the productivity, quality and safety of the documentation process.

The USIBD has releasedthree quarterly Cornerstone Reports based on surveys of building documentation professionals to help profile the industry.  One of the questions asked of the building documentation professionals responding to the first survey is how frequently 3D imaging is used in the building documentation industry.  Three-quarters of respondents said their clients used 3D imaging in just 25 percent of their projects.  Nearly 75 percent of respondents said they expect client use of 3D imaging to increase by 50 percent in the next year...
