K-12: Illiterate New World

K-12: Illiterate New World | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Remove and hide the most important piece in the puzzle, that's how you keep children from learning to read. Article analyzes Brave New World, not in terms of production lines in a factory, but in terms of deprivation. What do you hold back? In Brave New World, you hold back oxygen and thereby make intentionally damaged children. In K-12, you hold back the alphabet and thereby make intentionally illiterate children. This is juicy stuff.

Literacy Experts: Are They Ready To Apologize Yet? | Improve Education | Scoop.it

Literacy Experts: Are They Ready To Apologize Yet?, Phonics, Berys Dixon is the Education Establishment's worst nightmare, literacy, Education

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
School teacher finally figures out for herself that Whole Word doesn't work The story is so down to earth, the teacher is so down to earth; everyone should get the message. We can save the public schools if they all use a phonetic approach.

K-12: Does Anyone Care That Kids Cry?

K-12: Does Anyone Care That Kids Cry? | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Common Core is cruel and unusual punishment, and kids don't learn to do arithmetic. More people need to scream to stop this child abuse, just as more people needed to scream to save Kitty Genovese, a famous murder from years ago. The parallel is that something horrible is happening before your eyes; but people don't do enough to save the victim.

'Customized Learning' Means Every Student Learns Something Different

'Customized Learning' Means Every Student Learns Something Different | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Touted as another cure-all, mass customized learning means a more incoherent society.
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Customized learning – this is really big now. Lots of expensive technology so some people like that. The teacher’s role gets smaller and smaller so some people like that. Every kid in the classroom will learn something different; I think that’s a big problem.

Child Abuse is Being Rooted Out- Now What About Cognitive Abuse?

Child Abuse is Being Rooted Out- Now What About Cognitive Abuse? | Improve Education | Scoop.it
illiteracy can last a lifetime. There are today 40 or 50 million Americans needlessly stunted by this neglectful abuse of the developing mind.
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Child abuse, as in sexual abuse, is much more acknowledged after the pedophilia crisis in the Catholic Church of Boston.

Child abuse, as in weird and unworkable educational practice, is not so well acknowledged. A bad theory can lead to children not learning anything. But the results can be even worse than  ignorance: permanent cognitive and psychological damage. That's what  has happened to 50 million Americans, who are said to suffer from functional illiteracy, ADHD, dyslexia, and so on

The public has to fight back against this nonsense.

K-12: Killing Democracy

K-12: Killing Democracy | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
If you want democracy, you need phonics.
Flesch, long ago in 1955, explained the timeless dynamics: sight-word are hostile to democracy.
Oh well, one suspects our professors know this all too well. That's the plan.

K-12: Sight-Words are Hoax Words

BACK-TO-SCHOOL ALERT, K-12: Sight-Words are Hoax Words
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Sight-words – the ultimate hoax. It's very difficult to memorize even 300 of these things; and after you've done it, you're still illiterate. Now that is a vicious con.

K-12: Character Assassins

K-12: Character Assassins | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Everyone knows that academics are in decline. People are not so aware that character is also under attack. Public schools don’t encourage precision and extra effort. Kids are allowed to be sloppy and late. What does this prepare children to be?

Articles: K-16: Land of Lies

Articles: K-16: Land of Lies | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
American K-12 students write poorly-- worse each year according to much testimony. A new industry has sprung up: essays are written on demand by professional writers. Students hand them in under their own names. So one obvious crime  (plagiarism) conceals a completely separate crime, namely, that public schools refuse to teach writing and other basic skills in the first place..

Memo to President Trump: Common Core Must Be Destroyed

Memo to President Trump: Common Core Must Be Destroyed | Improve Education | Scoop.it
President Trump promised during the campaign to abolish Common Core. Now is a good time. The Education Establishment went too far, and thus has
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Trump promised to get rid of Common Core. I simply say, do it now. This is a large rotting carcass left to us by Obama the Wonderful. Please remember, this thing was never tested. It was patched together and hustled state to state with big bribes. A disgraceful display of governmental meddling. Politics and education are really very similar in this country. The same far-left fanatics run both. It would be a big setback for these people, and good for everyone else, if Common Core simply became History, and a convenient codeword for government overreach.

America, you've been punked

America, you've been punked | Improve Education | Scoop.it

The Reading Wars were always chaotic and confusing. :

On the one side, you had earnest, sincere people warning the country about the dangers of non-phonetic approaches (these were usually called Look-say, Whole Word, sight-words, and other jargon). The warning was always the same. Nobody can learn to read that way. It's a hoax! Don't do it! You're being punked

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
It's one of my main themes, that our Education Establishment is far-left and stuck in their ways. They are like an old cult that found a doctrine one hundred years ago; and they are going to push it forever. In the process, they are damaging the country.

 America, you've been punked!

Articles: K-12: Constructivism Is a Big Fat Con

Articles: K-12: Constructivism Is a Big Fat Con | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Constructivism is huge in K-12, from kindergarten all the way to the end. It basically dictates that teachers can no longer teach. If they do, then students are not "constructing" their own new knowledge. This may be the original house of cards where almost nothing substantial is there; but it's 10 stories tall. Please, let's knock it down.

K-12: The War on Boys and Men

K-12: The War on Boys and Men | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
The key insight is that girls and boys learn somewhat differently; namely, girls are more patient with poorly designed school materials. Now suppose you designed a reading curriculum so that it is impossible to master. Boys will give up sooner and turn away to other pursuits. Girls will have a higher literacy rate. This “key insight” may not sound like much but it is the essence of the War on Men. First, make the Boys illiterate. More than any other thing, this is why you have, at the college level, 57% female but only 43% male. This is social engineering at an almost cosmic level, and for me, evil at an almost cosmic level.

A stroll through the beautiful ruins of American public education

A stroll through the beautiful ruins of American public education | Improve Education | Scoop.it

Basically,Q: What is your main feeling about K-12 education today?

A: Sadness. There is a perennial waste of energy and money, both taken in great quantities from millions of citizens. Instruction, if logical and systematic, can teach a great deal in a timely way. Instruction, if incoherent, will leave students worse off than when they started. That is why McKinsey and Company, circa 2007, concluded that American students are measurably worse each additional year they remain in the public schools. Our #1 job is stopping this waste

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Basically, I'm interviewing myself about my favorite complaints. Q&A. A simple way to cover a lot of background topics all at once

K-12: Patterns of Deception | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
I don't think anybody can understand the political situation in the US  unless they also understand the educational situation. You have players (big, big players) in both arenas who say whatever will gain them a small advantage from day-to-day.   the Education Establishment seems to be a branch office of the Democrat Party.

K-12: let's listen to a real educator

K-12: let's listen to a real educator | Improve Education | Scoop.it

Last week I met a different kind of educator, a Roman named Quintilian, 35-100 AD. (He and Cicero, 106-63 BC, have long been considered the two great masters of oratory, language, and education.)

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
An entertaining and informative little piece. John Dewey's narrow and oppressive socialism versus the  optimistic, encouraging spirit of Quintilian, probably the most famous educator of the Roman era.

He says that humans are designed to learn quickly and learn a lot.   Meanwhile, all we hear from public schools is a negative chant suggesting that children will never learn very much. We need a lot less Dewey and a lot more Quintilian.

K-12: The Schools You Deserve, Education Establishment
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
What a scary thought. The public schools we have are exactly what we deserve?
This article points out a big problem for American civilization: we routinely tolerate a huge degree of incompetence, and probably hostility, in the planning and organization of K-12. Are we cursed? Or are we doing dumb things and making huge mistakes?

K-12: The Math You Need Is Not the Math You Get | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Reform Math and Common Core Math are best understood as Anti-Math. Kids are confused, parents are mystified, and teenagers can't do any math without a calculator. The whole thing is pathetic. I've just read through the 200+ comments on this article, all of them sensible and indignant that our own government has done this to us. On the other hand, they are not all that indignant. We need lots more people shouting, "I'm mad as hell and won't put up with it anymore."

K-12: the real problem is the Education Establishment

K-12: the real problem is the Education Establishment | Improve Education | Scoop.it
The only thing most Americans agree on is that the public schools are mediocre. As to why this happened and what we should do next, there is a total bedlam of beliefs and opinions.

People have a hundred theories to explain our ed problems. But here's the bizarre thing: people don't want to blame the obvious culprits, that is, the people in charge
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Big picture paradise: die-hard ideologues dumb down schools on purpose.

Articles: K-12: Central Planning and Participation Trophies | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
If everyone is given a diploma and a participation trophy, don't be fooled. It's possible that many students have  received virtually no education.

The Education Establishment is totally focused on social engineering, dumbing down, and increasing their control. Then, to hide all the shenanigans, the education officials must corrupt language, churn out propaganda, and play games with the public's expectations.

Readers left a lot of very sincere and interesting comments on this article.

Articles: K-12: Drain This Swamp

Articles: K-12: Drain This Swamp | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Article explains that draining the swamp in education is actually easy. Progressive educators invented a whole bunch of dysfunctional methods and forced them on the school system. Now we need to get rid of them. Garbage in, so take the garbage out.

(From everything I can figure out, schools actually worked very very well in 1925. They were too severe by our standards. They lacked all the  wonderful teaching aids we have now. But in terms of what they were trying to do, it was a good place to be.
Real teachers trying to teach real content, the whole system set up to create educated citizens. I have bad news for you. Our Education Establishment does everything it can to sabotage all of those things. So we end up with poorly trained teachers, with  calorie-free  courses, and the goal is to educate  people who want to be part of a totalitarian society.)

Entertaining and informative comments, often bitter, by parents about their struggles with local public schools. I always say there are three sets of victims: children, teachers, and parents. These people are in the trenches dealing with the mess created by an ideological Education Establishment.
