Google's modular smartphone, Project Ara, could go on sale next ... | Important Technologies Going Into the Next Decade. | Scoop.it
The utopian concept of having a single phone that you continuously upgrade over a few years, rather than wastefully replace in its entirety, could soon be a reality. ...
Jake Hall's insight:

An upgradable smart phone that you don't have to replace every year? A system on which you can switch out individual parts instead of replacing the entire phone? Sounds like fiction at first doesn't it?

A new smart phone codenamed 'Project Ara' is developing a device in which solve the common problems with today's phones such as becoming very quickly obsolete  and not being able to change parts as they break. The module design allows for individual customization of hardware so it doesn't create such a wasteful environment of throwing out a phone as soon as something goes wrong.

The best part about it is that the base model  is only going to cost $50 which is must cheaper than a conventional smart phone of today and the added bonus of not needed to upgrade every single part at once decreases the cost in the long run as well.

Modular hardware is important now and more so into the future as technology changes so fast becoming cheaper and more powerful by the second and having the ability to change out parts as they get old sounds like a great innovation.

Jake Hall's insight:

Its really exciting to see technologies being developed and produced today that could shape how people interact in the future. Although the technology that goes into the Oculus Rift is mainly concentrating on developing a Virtual Reality (VR) product for use in games, its easy to see how this technology could be implemented into other fields such as learning and teaching, global communication in a virtual environment, and being able to connect to different environments locally or globally to visualize directions to a destination or taking in the sights and sounds of a place without needs to travel there.

Theatrical robots. 3D printers that churn out cells. Wearables for infants. These types of technologies might be “out there,” but they show off key enabling technologies that are pushing the future of design forward These types ...
Jake Hall's insight:

Although the technologies that were listed were technologies that are already in use today, it gives little explanations, especially in the case of the 3D printer, of how the implementation of these devices could change the world as they become more affordable. As with a lot of technology as it becomes cheaper the more minds can work on using these things in ways that were totally unimaginable before.
