Connected World: Untangling the Air Traffic Network

Connected World: Untangling the Air Traffic Network | World at a Crossroads | Scoop.it

"People travel not just more frequently, but increasingly far and quickly. Mapping the connections between all the airports worldwide is a fascinating network visualization exercise.

A network, in its very essence, is already a map. And the global transportation maps that represent the flight connections rarely make this network intelligible: on a world map, Europe is often a very dense area where it’s almost impossible to distinguish the dots/airports.

Ultimately, these maps (sometimes very beautiful objects), do not represent the data itself, but some idea of the complexity and quantity. This post (which may be followed by further experimentations in this area) is an attempt to make explicit the network behind air transport. The structure of the relationships has an impact on the spatial distribution of nodes in a graph. Let’s see how this landscape is reorganized without geographical constraints.#

Progress toward a new flu treatment, thanks to a small tweak  | World at a Crossroads | Scoop.it
This year's aggressive flu season reminds everyone that although the flu vaccine can reduce the number of people who contract the virus, it is still not 100 percent effective. A tweak to a small-molecule drug shows promise for future production of new antiviral therapies that could help patients, regardless of the strain with which they are infected. The researchers present their work at the 255th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society.

Big switch: Electric cars put China on automobile map

Big switch: Electric cars put China on automobile map | World at a Crossroads | Scoop.it
The rise of electric cars heralds not only a major technology switch but also promises massive disruption to today's auto giants as Tesla and a group of powerful Chinese rivals take over the fast lane.

The diesel scandal in 2015 in which Volkswagen admitted manipulating 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide to fool pollution tests only briefly dented the firm's profits.

However industry insiders say it may have spurred the shift away from conventional internal combustion engines.

"'Dieselgate' is becoming a catastrophe because it has accelerated" the transition to electric motors and "that puts Chinese competitors into play", said one European automaker executive on condition of anonymity.

The extent to which the trend towards electric cars is gaining traction will be visible this week at the Geneva motor show.

The switch to electric motors threatens to eliminate an advantage that today's carmakers enjoy.

World's largest ivory burn delivered a strong message -- but who received it? | World at a Crossroads | Scoop.it
Media coverage of the torching of huge caches of ivory presented a strong message against elephant poaching and ivory trade, but many of those who needed to hear it most may not have received it, an international study has found.

University of Queensland researcher Alexander Braczkowski said an examination of the global media coverage of the world's largest ivory burn in Kenya in 2016, revealed that coverage disproportionately reached western audiences.
