Funders, non-profit executives, and policymakers are very enthusiastic about measuring social value. Alas, they cannot agree on what it is, let alone how to assess it. Their main obstacle is assuming that social value is objective, fixed, and stable. When people approach social value as subjective, malleable, and variable, they create better metrics to capture it.

Assessment Criteria
Applicants will be evaluated on many different criteria during the course of the selection process. Here are some of the main components:

 

Applicant is an emerging social entrepreneur:

• Demonstrated leadership potential
• Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles
• Strong passion and commitment for the program area in which they plan to work
• Practical skills, including problem-solving, strategic and organizational abilities
• Capable “Resource Magnet,” able to attract money and people to cause
• Personal integrity

 

Applicant's plan will result in a sustainable organization:

• Clear and compelling mission and objectives
• Sound strategy and plan for program development and delivery
• Plan for evaluating success and performance
• Plan for financial sustainability and growth
• Existing support network

 

Applicant can clearly articulate their vision for social change:

• Seriousness of the social problem they will address
• Innovative idea and approach
• Potential for tangible impact to the beneficiary population
• Potential for replication and growth
• Potential for effecting systemic change (e.g., policy change, societal change, influence in their field)
