Digital freedom: Virtual reality, avatars, and multiple identities: Jim Blascovich at TEDxWinnipeg - YouTube

Josie Eldred's curator insight, September 9, 2014 1:27 AM

13. This video is long and covers the topic of multiple identities quite broadly, but there are a few quotes in it that I think are very relevant to my presentation. This one in particular stood out to me: "Digital worlds, including chat rooms, massive multiplayer online games, unstructured social platforms such as Second Life and 3D immersive virtual reality - think Kinect but on steroids - have opened doors to perceptions and self presentations that have never been opened before." (Blascovich, J., 2011) I think the points that Jim Blascovich puts forward about the ability to be able to experiment with self presentation and exploration through online technologies are worth noting. Given that Mr Blascovich is a psychologist specialising in social influence within technologically mediated environment (amongst other things) and that he's done extensive research on the topic of online identity, I trust his authority.

Why Minecraft Rewrites the Playbook for Learning

Why Minecraft Rewrites the Playbook for Learning | Immersive World Technology | Scoop.it
Together these four dimensions of Minecraft make my progressive digital educator heart go pitter patter. My career is devoted to seeking out ways to mobilize digital technology and networks for learning that empowers kids to be problem solvers, creators, and civically engaged. Minecraft is game changing in my corner of educational reform and the movement for connected learning.

So, I can't help but join the growing ranks of educators running programs in Minecraft. After a successful pilot with 250 kids last summer, I've launched a new start-up with two fellow girl geek educators, Tara Tiger Brown (co-founder of LA Makerspace and KitHub), and Katie Salen (founder of Institute of Play). On July 6, we will be opening the doors to a new online summer camp in Minecraft that runs on our homegrown servers, and campers from all over the world are welcome to sign up. Our servers are tricked out with mods designed to make the environment kid and learning friendly, and will be staffed by high school and college counselors who are longtime Minecraft nerds. Our weekly challenges are open to everybody on our server or elsewhere and we're hoping to draw even more kids to the learning potential of Minecraft.

Eddi and Ryce Photograph Second Life: Great Second Life Destinations: The Johnny Cash Boyhood Home at Arkansas State University | Immersive World Technology | Scoop.it

Arkansas State University, a mid-sized public institution,  has the most impressive presence of any educational institution I have yet seen in Second Life. The attractive campus, spread over 5 regions, is realistically designed and attractively landscaped.  What makes Arkansas State's virtual campus such a standout are two star attractions which need to be seen by anyone who great virtual design - the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home and the Southern Tenant's Farmer Museum.
