Virtual reality

Via Mathy
Sandys VR's insight:

Interesting slide about the "history" of virtual reality, where it comes from where it evolved to and what the future might bring. There could be more detail in some parts and less detail in others but it gives a very good general overview.

Virtual-reality goggles aren't just for gaming
Tribune-Review
Oculus is using $16 million in venture capital it raised in June to hire virtual reality experts to solve those and other problems.
Sandys VR's insight:

Is it just me or does this article sound like Oculus has invented VR?

It's almost like before the Oculus, there was no VR whatsoever... Don't get me wrong: The Oculus did improve the accessibility of virtual reality a lot. But it did not invent it. NASA has used VR for decades now. As well as researchers in different fields, most often psychologists especially for spatial cognition studies etc. Architects started using it a few years ago too. I believe they are probably among the ones that will use it more with cheaper hardware like the Oculus available.

Danny Blakesley's curator insight, March 26, 2014 1:49 AM

Virtual reality has gone far  beyond what Oculus has already made. The applications of virtual reality have expanded in ways that will allow many fields and industries to make use of virtual reality in the near future.

Virtual reality lab a new frontier in treating violent, mentally ill patients

Virtual reality lab a new frontier in treating violent, mentally ill patients | Immersive Virtual Reality | Scoop.it

Montreal's Philippe-Pinel Institute unveiled a million-dollar tool this week they say could revolutionize the way mentally ill criminals are rehabilitated.

Sandys VR's insight:

VR is such a great tool. We've been working on a similar project for one of our customers. Before I wouldn't even imagine that you could possibly use virtual reality application in those scenarios. But it seems to work.

Imagine yourself back in high school, entering your gym – not for sports but to take an immersive virtual reality field trip in which you can walk for miles. Professor Eric Hodgson of Miami University, Ohio, a psychologist, studying human spatial ...
Sandys VR's insight:

This actually is pretty amazing. I was able to try the "shoe-lace tracker" from Prof. Hodgson this year at IEEE VR in Orlando. Off the trade show floor in the hall he had his equipment set up. Well, set up is actually a little bit too much, it's just a backpack with a laptop, an HMD and two little gyroscope tracker that click onto your shoe-lace. Although I didn't have shoe-laces on my ballerinas we got it to work (we actually taped it to my shoes). And then I started walking through a virtual supermarket in full scale. Actually they didn't watch out for me properly and I ran into a wall and afterwards into a door. It works amazingly well! It was a little jumpy sometimes but I could even walk outdoors with reasonable results.

Afterwards, Eric showed me some pretty impressive graphs comparing WorldViz's active optical tracking results to the results of his tracker. They we're aligned almost perfectly! It's really impressive work the guys in Ohio do. The HIVE is pretty awesome. I still hope to be able to visit them at some point. Imagine a basketball field for VR :)

And I just realized that not long ago I wrote almost the same about this amazing piece of technology... Just a few scoops down, there was an interview with Eric Hodgson.

Sony HMZ-T3W Head Mounted Display brings 750-inch screen and 7.1 ...
Pocket-lint.com
Sony has just announced its third generation of Head Mounted Display, the HMZ-T3W, that lets you strap a 750-inch screen to your face.
Sandys VR's insight:

That sounds promising for a change. I'm very curios about this device, let's how it will be. I heard rumours, that Sony will release this in November in Europe, that is pretty soon :) But around $2000 is a lot compared to the Oculus. But maybe, just maybe it's worth the price. I'd be happy to be able to offer my customers one more possibility in the lower price area for an HMD!

Blog: Interview on Redirected Walking with Professor Eric Hodgson

The work can vary widely, which I find interesting and encouraging -- VR is becoming a very general-purpose tool rather than a niche for a few narrow fields. ...
Sandys VR's insight:

Very interesting approach on position tracking and wide-area walking. It even works  outside in the open with GPS supporting the gyroscope/accelerometer sensors. I had the pleasure to test a protoype at IEEE VR in Orlando this year. It is a little jumpy and not 100% precise but it works. You get a backpack with a laptop, an HMD and two sensor taped to your shoes, or better clipped to your shoelaces. I actually ran into a closed door because they weren't watching out for me and I was just immersed in the virtual environment ;)

Eric Hodgson also showed us some charts with tests he ran. Actually the graphs look pretty convincing. He compared the precision of his system with a WorldViz PPT system (accuracy <0.25mm over 3x3x3m volume) and it wasn't that bad. I don't remember the exact numbers though.

To put it in a nutshell: I am really looking forward to his final results. This would give us new opportunities in position tracking and will open entire new possibilities in terms of utilizability of VR.

Very well written, fun article about different input devices that can be used with the Oculus for more immersion of computer games. Or other applications, of course. The guys who wrote this did a really good job in giving you an overview over different devices and how to operate them, pros and cons etc.

I wouldn't use Unity though ;) but besides that, it's definitely worth reading.

Use head movement to control an external object

A straightforward way to use only the rift for controlling your game is to control the position of an object via head movement.

A good example for this method is the Breakout - inspired “Proton Pulse” by Pushy Pixels which lets you control a paddle’s x and y position with your head movement.

Virtual Reality - the world inside the computer, an unreal world which doesn't exist!  A world which exists nowhere except in your computer, your X-Box or perhaps, just inside your own head ...We are already living in a Cosmic three-dimensional holograph of light, sound and colour. Everything in this three-D plane of existence called Earth is unreal. We are already dreaming. Do we really want to lose ourselves in the illusion of Virtual Reality - I vote No. Coping with Life on Earth is hard enough as it is without getting lost inside Virtual Reality as well. But that's just me.  There are those out there who love the idea and if you are one of those who are all for it ... dig in and read this article!!

VR Mission: How Oculus’ New VR Headset Creates New Game Development Challenges

VR Mission: How Oculus’ New VR Headset Creates New Game Development Challenges | Immersive Virtual Reality | Scoop.it

Oculus' VR headset is impressive, but virtual reality is not the next big thing in gaming just yet.

Sandys VR's insight:

They are exaggerating quite a bit when it comes to the other currently available headsets. There are still very good HMDs on the market, yes, they are not consumer priced, but have up to 111 degrees field of view (diagonal in this case which is even more than what Oculus has). For professional applications the Oculus is not yet ready. Just what the article says, the display resolution is just too bad for psychological experiments or similar. But I'm looking forward to see the HD version, I think we will rreceive one soon. That can definitely be a game breaker even for professional solutions.

I'm still very curios about the issue with the motion sickness in gaming and what Ocullus might come up with.

Atlas Virtual Reality Turns Any Room Into A Holodeck You Can Run Around In

Atlas Virtual Reality Turns Any Room Into A Holodeck You Can Run Around In | Immersive Virtual Reality | Scoop.it
Archenemies for decades, video games and exercise are about to unite. Atlas is a cheap, new “walk-around” virtual reality system that uses markers you put on the ground to track your movements as you play with an Oculus Rift headset.
Sandys VR's insight:

Uh, pretty cool. Position-tracking is one of the key parts of VR. Unfortunately it also gets more expensive as it has to get more precise. I wonder how precise Atlas is and how accurate it can track your position. It seems like they're using some kind of fiducials or other optical markers to locate your position in a room mapped before. If you watch the video closely sometimes you can see little jumps, this seems to be a delay in the recognition of the markers by the iPhone. Great idea though! I hope this kind of technology will become more popular soon to have more reasonable priced but accurate solutions available.

Sandys VR's insight:

Nice Siggraph summary. Unfortunately I couldn't attend this year but this looks and sounds like I've expected it to be. 3D printing was a big hype last year, Canon was there with the same 'Mixed-Reality' headset and I expected to see a lot of Oculus Rift demonstrations.

My company showed a wireless integration of the Oculus Rift with our all time favorite 'The Pit', simulating you virtually jumping of a plank into a 60feet deep whole. With the light weight and comfortably fitting Oculus integrated wireless this is actually a really stunning experience.
