Oklahoma teachers are posting their crumbling textbooks online | Erica R. Hendry | PBS News Hour | PBS.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Alisha Malaska had an important question at this week’s parent-teacher conference: Why were her son’s textbooks falling apart?

Her son, a freshman at Bethany High School in Bethany, Oklahoma, is using a 2003 textbook to learn Spanish. His science textbook is 10 years old. While the state’s curriculum standards have changed several times over, the textbooks haven’t kept pace, she told the PBS NewsHour on Twitter.

She’s one of many parents and teachers across the state sharing pictures of decrepit or out-of-date textbooks during this week’s teacher strike in Oklahoma, where teacher pay ranked 50th in the nation until last week and where education funding as a whole has dropped drastically in the past decade. Ripped binding, torn pages and outdated information — such as listing the current president as George W. Bush, whose term ended in 2009 — have been a visible rallying cry as teachers demand better pay and more funding.

7 Questions Educators Are Asking About Their Rights to Speak Out, Protest, and Engage in Activism | edJustice | Education Votes | NEA.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

With several key dates for national actions on gun violence fast approaching, and the number of students and educators participating in such actions growing each week, many educators have questions about their rights when they engage in activism and protest on social justice issues.

In a national call with NEA members last week, attorneys with NEA’s Office of General Counsel addressed many of these issues, answering questions we are hearing most often about legal and free speech protections for educators who participate in actions in support of gun safety, DACA, Black Lives Matter@School, and more.

Below are a number of the key questions they addressed:

Ten Ways to Cultivate a Love of Reading in Students | Elena Aguilar | Edutopia.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

As a teacher, I was obsessed with cultivating a love of reading in my students. I love to read, loved it as a kid too. I'm equally compelled to ensure that my own child loves reading -- and he does. I well aware that I'm on a mission -- but I also know it's a worthy one!

Here are ten suggestions for how any teacher, teaching any subject can participate in this mission, and how parents and administrators can help.

The Obama Portraits and the History of African American Portraiture | Steven Nelson | HyperAllergic.com

The Obama Portraits and the History of African American Portraiture | Steven Nelson | HyperAllergic.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

On February 12, the presidential portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama were unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Much of the commentary on the works, by African American artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, has centered on questions of likeness. But such debates miss an essential point: these pictures represent the former first couple both as individuals and as archetypes of African Americans. Sherald and Wiley’s portraits are the newest additions to a long history of black representation, rooted in photography, that aimed to expand what blackness could be in America. These paintings also expand what presidential portraits can be.

Since the invention of the daguerreotype, in 1839, African Americans have used photography as a means of representing themselves against the backdrop of negative imagery, which often attempted to rob us of our humanity. Frederick Douglass, said to have been the most frequently photographed American of the 19th century, saw photography as a means to chart black progress from slavery, and to upend white stereotypes of black people.

Math Teachers Explain: 3 Reasons Lawmakers Fail at School Funding | Amanda Litvinov | NEAToday.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Telannia Norfar is a problem solver—in more ways than one.

She is quite literally a problem solver, as a math teacher at Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City, but also in the figurative sense: It is in her nature to identify problems and find a solution.

“What a shock, entering the teaching profession,” recalls Norfar, who previously worked in publishing. “The lack of resources, technology, and structure was so different from what I had access to in the corporate world. The computer in my classroom was older than me.”

She was thankful to have textbooks and a whiteboard and classes that usually stay under 30—social studies and English classes sometimes exceed 40 students.

But she still faced an array of problems, and she tackled them one by one.

It's Time To Worry When Colleges Erase Humanities Departments | Willard Dix | Forbes.com

It's Time To Worry When Colleges Erase Humanities Departments | Willard Dix | Forbes.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

On its website, the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point still has these statements:

"At UW-Stevens Point, you will enter a broad-based general education program. Our faculty will guide you toward global citizenship. They will challenge you to see the world from others’ perspectives.

Students are challenged to think globally and recognize their responsibility toward civic engagement and environmental sustainability. This critical foundation of our university degree allows students to build toward more advanced and specialized work in every major, minor and certificate program. Educational professionals and business leaders from all across the nation recognize the value of this type of broad-based education. It allows for intellectual flexibility and personal and professional growth."

These guiding principles can be found in one form or another on many colleges' websites, espousing not only a widely-based education but also a path toward "flexibility" in one's eventual career.

That was then, though; this is now.

Crazy Plant Ladies through the Ages: Women Naturalists, Botanists, and Horticulturalists Who Made History | GardenTherapy.ca

Crazy Plant Ladies through the Ages: Women Naturalists, Botanists, and Horticulturalists Who Made History | GardenTherapy.ca | immersive media | Scoop.it

Crazy plant ladies are my favorite people. They (we) are so passionate about nature and that enthusiasm is contagious. Today I want to take a minute to acknowledge some of the amazing historical ‘crazy plant ladies’ whose love of botanicals made an impact on the way we view plants and the study of plants today.

Historically, the appreciation of nature was not considered to be a specifically masculine trait, so it was acceptable for women to collect, record, and draw natural objects. Although excluded from most scientific studies at a professional level until recently, botany and horticulture was seen as an acceptable hobby for women and so it became a way for them to become involved in science and research at a time when science was all but closed to women because of their gender.

Why The Art of Speaking Should Be Taught Alongside Math and Literacy | MindShift | KQED News | KQED.org

Why The Art of Speaking Should Be Taught Alongside Math and Literacy | MindShift | KQED News | KQED.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Classrooms in the U.S. often focus most attention on literacy and math, largely because those skills are considered foundational and are tested. However most people will also need to communicate their thoughts and ideas to other people through oral language, and yet effective communication strategies are often not taught with the same precision and structure as other parts of the curriculum.

School 21, a public school in London has made "oracy" a primary focus of everything they do. From the earliest grades on up teachers support students to find their voice, express differing opinions politely, and challenge one another's thinking. These are skills called for in the Common Core, but can be hard to find in many classrooms because students haven't been taught how to make "turn and talks" truly effective.

The Edutopia team visited School 21 and captured some amazing videos of students practicing their communication skills with support from teachers.
