LucaVanin - It can have the same connotation of untruth in the west; just depends on context (and who's paying!) In Entertainment, of course, no one worries about superficial truth. Even (especially?) in Reality TV. What matters is the universal truth that stories can deliver. That is the real litmus test of truth.

Editorial Statement For This Collection:

Thank you for visiting this curation of articles on leadership storytelling. I've chosen them because they actually make a contribution to our knowledge and wisdom about stories, show us how to work with stories in leadership, org culture, key business functions, and the like.

I weed out all the junk. And besides, who needs another post in why storytelling is important?? Where's the beef?? We want the meat!

I'm the author of the bestselling book Business Storytelling For Dummies (with Lori Silverman) and an original in the field of business storytelling. Based on my 20+ years of biz story experience, (plus a PhD in Folklore) I've written reviews of each article to share what I like best, what you can get from reading the article, or what may be missing in the article.

How To Find A Topic: Click on the Filter icon above (look for the 'funnel' shape), and view the tags. Select one that interests you, or type in a keyword in the search box. All the articles with that tag or keyword will appear.

I may occasionally review an article that I think is problematic as a way to educate us all, although most I will simply pass over. If you wonder if I've seen an article that is not included here, send me a message at linkedin.com/in/karendietz and I'll respond.

I trust you find many great insights and tips here. Many thanks for visiting and enjoy the articles!

Don't forget to connect with me on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, too. See you around the leadership and storytelling 'hood.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking over significant parts of storytelling. Here's how:

In this post, Jamie Carter writes for TechRadar about the 5 different ways AI is doing storytelling.

There's everything from apps helping you to write better based on AI's natural language processing, to creating emotional arcs that now accurately predict emotional engagement. Read more in Carter's article.

It's happening now -- and fast. Movie makers and news organizations are using AI today. Marketing professionals are catching up fast, if not already there.

So if machines are taking over both functional (story structures) and emotional areas of storytelling, where does that leave humans?

AI can be a great assist in storytelling. But people will still have to stand and deliver. Oh, wait...is that a robot up on The Moth stage??!!

Why Storyshowing Beats Storytelling Every Time

OK -- I like most of this interview with Sam Cawthorn. Except for his silly distinction between storytelling and storyshowing. It's a load of hooey.

Anybody who knows authentic storytelling knows that "story showing" automatically happens -- because when you are reliving your experience, you are conveying visuals automatically. Your audience can then see and experience what you did.

When that is NOT happening, you are sharing a simple series of events: I went to the store, I bought some break, I made a sandwich. That's not storytelling.

That being said, I do like the rest of what Cawthorn shares. He talks about leaders preaching instead of inspiring. Right on.

He also makes a fab point that great storytelling is not about the content, it's about the delivery! Yet most people focus mostly on the content and forget the delivery. The result? Mediocre storytelling or an actual epic fail.

Read more and please -- just don't get hooked into his dumb "we've been told to do it wrong!" storyshowing stuff.

Seeing White Podcasts | Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University | CDSPorch.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

A 14-part documentary series exploring whiteness in America—where it came from, what it means, and how it works.

Just what is going on with white people? Police shootings of unarmed African Americans. Acts of domestic terrorism by white supremacists. The renewed embrace of raw, undisguised white-identity politics. Unending racial inequity in schools, housing, criminal justice, and hiring. Some of this feels new, but in truth it’s an old story.

Why? Where did the notion of “whiteness” come from? What does it mean? What is whiteness for?

Scene on Radio host and producer John Biewen took a deep dive into these questions, along with an array of leading scholars and regular guest Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika, in this fourteen-part documentary series, released between February and August 2017. The series editor is Loretta Williams.

Objects hold history. They're evocative of stories stamped in time. As part of The Washington Post's coverage of the Smithsonian's new National Museum of African American History and Culture, people submitted dozens of objects that make up their own lived experiences of black history, creating a "people's museum" of personal objects, family photos and more.

The Historically Black podcast brings those objects and their stories to life through interviews, archival sound and music.

The Washington Post and APM Reports are proud to collaborate in presenting these rich personal histories, along with hosts Keegan-Michael Key, Roxane Gay, Issa Rae and Another Round hosts Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton.

Want to know how to do great storytelling on your website? Well, using a parallax layout is one way and here's a post that lists the most effective 11 examples.

I'm periodically asked about telling stories on websites, so these examples should spark some ideas -- whether you use parallax or not.

While it's true that most of these examples are educational and not necessarily focused on business, that doesn't mean you can't make the translation. Think about one of your signature stories -- maybe your brand story about how your business got started and why, and then how that translated into a unique offering in the marketplace.

Hmmm....something to think about.

One year in, teachers hand DeVos an 'F' grade | Greg Toppo | FirstCoastNews.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

One year after U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was sworn in, teachers’ groups delivered “report cards” to her place of employment, grading the secretary on her performance protecting students’ civil rights, ensuring educational equity and providing funding for students of color and low-income students.

Predictably, the teachers did not grade on a curve.

The groups, which have largely been adversarial during DeVos’ tenure, gave her all Fs. They also delivered what they said were 80,000 individual teachers’ evaluations of DeVos, along with comments about what she’d see if she visited their classrooms.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, who addressed a small group of activists gathered in the cold outside the U.S. Education Department on Thursday, said 90% of the teachers “frankly gave Betsy DeVos a failing grade".

The two largest teachers unions in the U.S. were blocked from delivering “failing” report cards to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Thursday.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA) were among the groups that attempted to deliver more than 80,000 report cards to DeVos grading her performance during her first year in the job.

However, the groups were blocked from entering the Education Department building because they did not have an appointment.

AFT President Randi Weingarten tweeted that the groups had requested an appointment with the department and that officials knew they were coming, but that they were still blocked from delivering the report cards.

Unsure whether he would be a victim or survivor of the mass shooting taking place outside his Florida classroom, 14-year-old Aidan Minoff sent an eight-word tweet.

“I am in a school shooting right now ... ” Aidan said, before the world knew the day would end with 17 students and teachers dead.

Tens of thousands of people locked onto Aidan’s feed for the next 86 minutes, where he posted messages from the linoleum floor of his classroom, amid a forest of metal desk legs.

When the carnage ended, Aidan, and other teenagers who survived the attack, faced the cold lens of news cameras, not knowing the fate of all their friends and teachers, but they were sure about one thing.

Solutions must be found to tackle US gun violence crisis.
