The 4 Phases Of Developing Your Creative Storytelling Voice

No one wishes their way to mastery.

Via Dr. Karen Dietz

Dr. Karen Dietz's curator insight, August 28, 2015 12:01 PM

Here's a fabulous post that speaks to the creative process anyone goes through when improving their business storytelling skills and expanding their authentic voice.

It takes awhile to do both, and not many folk in our field talk about the inner process of becoming a fabulous storyteller. This article explains the 4 stages that occur.

I love that for each stage, the author, Todd Henry, provides several provocative questions for us to help us get through it. Brilliant!

The weekend is here, and its a perfect time to contemplate where you are in the process, and what's coming next.

Creativity, Innovation, and Storytelling For Business Success

Now here's a piece coming from the worlds of creativity and education about the necessity for storytelling -- but it is directly applicable to business.

As you read the article by Menno van DijkLaurie Kemp, whenever the words "education" or "school" are mentioned, simply substitute the word "business" and you'll get their points.

The authors discuss research from the journal of Creativity And Innovation Management. The focus of the research was how storytelling skills build creativity and innovation abilities. There's even a link to the original research article that you can download for free.

And a business's competitive edge today is in creativity and innovation, right? In fact, that's the competitive edge for the US economy in the global marketplace.

The research focuses on storytelling in schools. But if it's good for students, it's good for business.

The take away? If you are in business of any size, training in storytelling could be a key to your sustainable future. If you are a consultant or coach, adding storytelling skills to your repertoire could keep your pipeline fed (but get trained in storytelling first, please).

Storytelling, creativity, innovation -- go forth and prosper!

I am always on the hunt for articles that are great examples of stories in action. In this case, LinkedIn connection Karthik Rajan of GDF SUEZ wrote this piece and it really shows how stories can be used effectively to convey complex ideas simply.

Another reason I like this post is that the stories Rajan shares also have more than one idea imbedded in them, and hence contain multiple meanings. Which idea and meaning you will emphasize depends on the situation and your intention as the teller.

In addition to the points Rajan makes, what other ideas and meanings do you find embedded in the stories he shares?

Getting better at storytelling: Creative Advice From Ira Glass

A brief film illustrates words of wisdom from the beloved host of This American Life.

Dr. Karen Dietz's curator insight, February 18, 2014 8:43 AM

Ira Glass, the creator and storyteller of This American Life, rocks. The stories he and his guests tell are always interesting if not down right riveting.

But here Glass is not sharing about the mechanics of how to craft a story. In this short video he talks about the creative process, how/when some people short circuit that, and encouragement to get beyond that point.

This video applies to anyone engaged in storytelling -- and anyone engaged in any creative process -- from the arts to engineering.

For storytelling, you get better at sharing stories by practicing, getting better over time, and developing a body of work. Glass hits on all these points, giving us inspiration to both embark on the journey, and to keep going.

Keep finding and telling your business stories! You will learn tons.

Karen Dietz continues to share the gems she collects and the insights that reinforce that we are and have always been storytellers.  Before written history the wisdom and history were passed down orally. Visiting here in Kauai the stories were shared/taught in movement and chant.

We are and have always been story tellers. The stories are thread that link the pearls of wisdom, knowledge, experience and insight together.

In the teaching field, we have to develop in our students different skills (cognitive, linguistic, etc.). However, we forget one of the most important for them: Creativity. The development of this skill is so important that it will improve at the same time the other skills. Students are more alike when face task where they can explore their imagination, even if they are adults, because it enhaces them to remember their childhood and work with more enthusiasm.

These 10 short interactive films are amazing. They are all unqiue, employing different methods for viewers to engage with the story.

My colleague Mark Goldman reminded me of this piece. I'd seen it earlier but not had the time to dig into it. I took the time today to do so, and am glad I did. I think you will be amazed also.

Enjoy the many ways stories can be told -- especially using different techniques and technologies. You don't need all these bells and whistles, but I bet you'll get ideas for ways you want to share some of your stories.
