Journal Entry

Brian Marshall's insight:

Wilson, Pete. "The Cost of Illegal Immigration." LexisNexis. N.p., 12 Dec. 1996. Web. 9 July 2014.

This journal entry discusses the crisis that is illegal immigration. The author Pete Wilson talks about how illegal immigration hurts the legal immigration and how illegal immigrants take money away from legalized citizens. The government has to pay for these illegals which takes money away from the everyday services Americans need. Wilson believes this to be wrong . The entry is relevant to the topic of illegal immigration because it talks about how illegal immigrants affect the US directly. It also discusses how there is a right way to immigrate in the country and a wrong way. The entry was written by Pete Wilson, an ex governor of California. The fact that Wilson is a political figure shows some bias, but most of the article gives good and credible facts.

Obama administration released tens of thousands illegal immigrants - political Headlines
Brian Marshall's insight:

Meke, Rick. Illegal Immigration. The Augusta Chronicle. Web. 06 Jul 2014

The image  shows in a comical way what the US-Mexico border looks like. It is visually showing how easy it is to cross over to the US and showing how many cross over into the country in a exaggerated way. It is also taking a slight stab at President Obama by showing that he is doing nothing but standing by while illegal immigrants cross over. It also is saying that The fencing and wall between the two countries are his only immigration system. The image is relevant to the topic of illegal immigration because it directly includes americas immigration policy. The image comes from Rick McKee who is a artist that does many political paintings and is a credible source.

Immigration crisis: Official: ‘A tsunami of people crossing the border’

Immigration crisis: Official: ‘A tsunami of people crossing the border’ | Illegal Immigration | Scoop.it
The mass migration of illegal immigrants into the United States is like a “hurricane that won’t stop,” according to sources inside an organization contracted to run refugee camps for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Brian Marshall's insight:

Starnes, Todd. "Immigration Crisis: Official: 'A Tsunami of People Crossing the Border'" Fox News. FOX News Network, 03 July 2014. Video. 07 July 2014.

The video covers the recent illegal immigration issue in Murrieta, California. US officials tried to bus illegal immigrants into the town's border patrol center to be housed. Citizens of the town protested and stopped the buses on the roads forcing them to turn around. They believe it is unfair to their town to have an illegal immigrant dropped off there.  The mayor states the government needs to have a more efficient way to process the immigrants and not house them in random towns. He thinks they should have the housing centers near the border so that they can be processed there. The video shows how frustrated Americans are with the illegal immigration that is flooding the towns and that the government needs to reform their tactics. The mayor also gives a good idea on how the immigrants should be housed away from the citizens. The information was taken from Fox News which can be biased source. Most of the information does not include any personal opinions which makes it a good video for the topic of illegal immigration.

This source briefly talks about the two different view points on illegal immigration. One side saying its good due to  the fact that immigrants offer low labor costs and give additional tax revenue. It is also stated that the immigrants add to the culture with hard work and good values. The opposing side states that they are criminals breaking the law and are a social and economic burden. This source gives brief but good information on the subject of illegal immigration. It discusses the two main viewpoints on the topic and their reasoning for their thoughts. Central Americans Flow Into Mexico, Bound for U.S.

Central Americans Flow Into Mexico, Bound for U.S. | Illegal Immigration | Scoop.it
Central Americans fleeing crime and economic stagnation are flowing freely across Mexico’s southern border and causing a spike in migration to the United States.
Brian Marshall's insight:

Archibold, Randal C. "In Trek North, First Lure Is Mexico’s Other Line." The New York Times. The New York Times, 26 Apr. 2013. Web. 09 July 2014.

This article in the New York Times talks about how Central Americans are fleeing into Mexico and heading to the US. With many Mexican drug cartels going into Central America, they are wanting to escape. When they reach Mexico they don't get stopped because Mexico does not have a budget for immigrants. This causes them to go in to the US illegally. This is relevant to the topic of illegal immigration because it talks about the illegals that flee into Mexico and make it to the US from Central America. It shows that it's more than just the US that needs to fortify its borders. The article comes from the New York Times which is a credible newspaper source.

Munoz, Manuel.  “Leave Your Name at the Boarder.” The McGraw-Hill Reader: Issues across the Disciplines. Ed. Gilbert H. Muller. 11th ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2011. 71-75. Print.

A essay about immigration to the United States from Mexico. The main point of the essay is that when people come from Mexico to the US, their hispanic names usually get an American translation. Also mentioned are the struggles and hardships they are faced with when moving across the border.  The essay is relevant to the topic of illegal immigration because of the detailed discussion of Hispanic Americans crossing the border to start a new life, which is the reason most immigrants and illegal immigrants do it. The essay is a credible source because it comes from a text book and doesn't show any bias.

Showdown over immigration: 'This is an invasion'

Showdown over immigration: 'This is an invasion' | Illegal Immigration | Scoop.it
National controversy over a surge of Central American immigrants illegally crossing the U.S. border establishes a new battleground in Murrieta, California.
Brian Marshall's insight:

Payne, Ed, Michael Martinez, Chuck Conder, Stephanie Elam, Rosalina Nieves, Traci Tamura, and Greg   Morrison. "Showdown over Immigration: 'This Is an Invasion'" CNN. Cable News Network, 03 July. 2014.  Video. 07 July 2014.

The video discusses the recent rise in illegal immigrants in the south west near the Mexican border. Most of the recent illegals are coming from Central America and are mainly women and children. After the illegals are picked up by US officials, they are sent to nearby border patrol centers in small towns. The video shows very angry citizens blocking the road so that the buses full of illegal immigrants cannot enter their town. This causes them to turn around and be sent to other centers. The information given by this video shows the side of the angry citizens that do not stand for this type of immigration. It shows that some American citizens are trying stand up and stop illegal immigration into their own small towns. The video is coming from CNN, which can sometimes be a bias source, however the video isn't giving any opinions. The video only states what is going on in some small towns near the Mexican border. This is a good source for the topic of illegal immigration due to the specific examples.
