The David Collection - The Il-Khanids

The David Collection - The Il-Khanids | imagen trascendental y expansión religiosa | Scoop.it

Miniature from a copy of Firdawsi’s Shah-nama. “Mubad-i Mubadan Brings Food to the Captive Vizier Izad-i Gashasp”Iran, Tabriz; between 1300 and 1340
Leaf: 24 × 18.5 cm

The manuscripts that were made in the Mongol or Il-Khanid period have both features from “Arab painting” and elements from Far Eastern art. This painting is quite Arab in expression, while scenes with warriors and landscapes display Chinese inspiration to a higher degree.

The first extant copies of Firdawsi’s famous 11th-century Persian epic, the Book of Kings, were written under the Il-Khanids. This miniature comes from one of the “small Shah-namas” that are considered by some to be precursors of the period’s more mature masterpiece, the great “Demotte Shah-nama.”

Fragment of a glass bowl, decorated with gold and blue enamel between two layers of glass. (Sandwich glass) Syria or Iran; 10th century
H: 8.5 cm

The decoration was created by first applying gold and blue enamel to the inside of a glass bowl, after which a second glass bowl was blown into the first, encapsulating the decoration in the glass. Sandwich glass of this type is known from both the Roman and Byzantine eras, but is extremely rare from the Islamic period. The glass fragment bears a decoration of winged palmettes and a Kufi inscription that dates it to the 10th century. As such, it also provides a key to dating other Islamic glass of this type.

Earthenware albarello, painted in blue in, and with two tones of luster over, an opaque, white glazeManises, Spain; 1st half of 15th century
H: 29.5 cm

Both faience and the luster technique reached Muslim Spain from Iraq by way of Egypt. In the middle of the 13th century, high-quality lusterware was made in Malaga, from which it spread with Muslim craftsmen to Christian Spain. This “Spanish-Moorish” pottery was exported e.g. to Italy, where it was called majolica or faience, after the island Mallorca and the town of Faenza.

A jar with concave sides is called an albarello, probably from the Spanish-Arabic word al-barrada – a jug. The type was most often used in pharmacies, since the shape made it easy to grasp the jars even when they stood in lines.

Medium: Wool, cotton

Location: SHANGRI LA, Textile Storage

More Information: This shaped carpet belongs to a group of fine Indian carpets distinguished by an arched trapezoidal form, a pile of sheep’s wool, and rows of naturalistic floral bouquets oriented towards the left, upper, and right edges. Such carpets are attributed to Lahore or Kashmir and generally dated to the reign of Shah Jahan (r. 1628–66). Their original use is subject to speculation. Some scholars have suggested that they were ordered for the Amber Fort, the residence of the Kachwaha Rajputs, where, arranged in pairs, they perhaps enclosed a fountain or throne. Others have argued that they furnished tent complexes.
