Human Metasystem Transition (HMST) Theory

Human Metasystem Transition (HMST) Theory | Illuminating the way! | Scoop.it
Metasystem transitions are events representing the evolutionary emergence of a higher level of organization through the integration of subsystems into a higher “metasystem” (A1+A2+A3=B). Such events have occurred several times throughout the history of life (e.g., emergence of life, multicellular life, sexual reproduction). The emergence of new levels of organization has occurred within the human system three times, and has resulted in three broadly defined levels of higher control, producing three broadly defined levels of group selection (e.g., band/tribe, chiefdom/kingdom, nation-state/international). These are “Human Metasystem Transitions” (HMST). Throughout these HMST several common system-level patterns have manifested that are fundamental to understanding the nature and evolution of the human system, as well as our potential future development.

First, HMST have been built around the control of three mostly distinct primary energy sources (e.g., hunting, agriculture, industry).

Second, the control of new energy sources has always been achieved and stabilized by utilizing the evolutionary emergence of a more powerful information-processing medium (e.g., language, writing, printing press).

Third, new controls emerge with the capability of organizing energy flows over larger expanses of space in shorter durations of time: bands/tribes controlled regional space and stabilized for hundreds of thousand of years, chiefdoms/kingdoms controlled semi-continental expanses of space and stabilized for thousands of years, and nation-states control continental expanses of space and have stabilized for centuries.

New advances in measuring social-emotional learning - The Hechinger Report

New advances in measuring social-emotional learning - The Hechinger Report | Illuminating the way! | Scoop.it
Now districts are elevating social and emotional learning, as well, drawing from a large body of research showing that skills like grit and self-regulation are critical to life success. If they’re so valuable, the logic goes, schools should find concrete ways to teach them. And with teaching comes testing — not only to ensure students’ learning can be measured, but so that educators can determine how well the new efforts are working.

Mary Babcock's curator insight, October 1, 2017 9:17 AM
Addressing the importance of social/emotional intelligence researchers are designing tools to assess student progress toward such things as grit and emotional awareness. Two specific assessment tools are discussed in this article. Educators are pulled in many directions. Classroom time is limited. For teachers to carve out time to implement instruction that specifically targets such things as growth mindset, grit, and emotional awareness, they must be able to verify the effectiveness of the instruction. The next step, then, is to identify tools outside of the general inventories to accurately assess students' movement toward outcomes. The assessments are much needed, and I look forward to their use in the classroom.

We often think of training as solely a learning endeavor, but educational events can also serve as opportunities to build new relationships. Whether delivered online or in the classroom, learning experiences--when designed with an eye on socialization--bring people together in ways that typical networking or social events cannot. Charles : Building a Culture of Continuous Learning

Charles : Building a Culture of Continuous Learning | Illuminating the way! | Scoop.it

...As we move beyond content-rich learning to exploit experience-rich learning in the workplace we need solid models and approaches that will help, and we need tools that will help us support a culture of continuous learning. This is where many organisations are finding the 70:20:10 model useful.

My experience is that the 70:20:10 framework provides a holistic strategic model that helps build a culture of continuous learning. It does this by helping learning professionals and their organisations focus on viable alternatives for development to the ‘10’ – structured, directed, ‘formal’ learning through courses, classes and eLearning.

By supporting learning within the workflow, and through and with others, the culture of learning will evolve – I’ve seen it happen.

Why the Increased Focus on Social-Emotional Learning? - by Katherine Prince

Why the Increased Focus on Social-Emotional Learning? - by Katherine Prince | Illuminating the way! | Scoop.it
by Katherine Prince

"With increasing frequency, social-emotional learning (SEL) is getting renewed attention — in research, in policy and in the classroom. It’s not a new concept, so why is there new interest? Education stakeholders increasingly realize that it prepares students not only for today, but also for tomorrow.

"There are some job skills that transcend industry: deep self-knowledge, emotional regulation and empathy and perspective taking. These three areas of social-emotional skills provide a strong foundation upon which people can grow specific functional skills and knowledge. In addition to core academic knowledge, how might we make these skills central to teaching and learning?"

I was a little skeptical on this.  However, if you think about it-it makes sense.  All of this technology used for social media is impeding students from learning to critically think, collaborate, empathize-among other things.  Helping them learn to work closely with others in a school environment will help them learn to engage well with others at work and in society as a whole when they are adults.
