White House requests $3.7 billion to handle influx of undocumented children | Illegal immigration | Scoop.it
Administration sends request to Congress to handle immigration crisis in an "aggressive and cost effective way"
John Blount's insight:

Condon , Stephanie. "White House Requests $3.7 Billion to Handle Influx of Undocumented Childeren." CBS News. CBS News, 08 July 2014. Web. 10 July 2014.

The article above states Obama administration asked Congress for $3.7 billion to help solve epidemic of children illegally trying to cross the southern boarders into the United States. The article states, "The funding would go to the Departments of Homeland Security (DHS), Justice (DOJ), State and Health and Human Services (HHS)."  This money could help to solve some of the major problems that are causing this problem to become a overwhelming crisis. Recently, Vice President traveled to Central America and met with local authorities to address the problem as well as Secretary of State John Kerry met with leaders in Panama both trying to find a way to detour them from sending children to the borders. The Speaker of the House John Boehner believe in sending more National Guardsmen to the border however he states that doesn't seem to be mentioned in Obama's plan. The article includes the plan for how the money would be divided up between sectors and the direction it would be used. The article concludes by saying, "Currently, the priority is to process detained adults, but the priority will now expand to include these other two categories in an effort to expedite the removal of the tens of thousands of children entering the U.S. illegally." Providing factual evidence of the measure being taken to solve this problem.  CBS news provides daily news to millions of viewers around the United States and has received numerous awards for its broadcasts giving it its credibility.

Are fewer Mexicans crossing the border to the United States?

Are fewer Mexicans crossing the border to the United States? | Illegal immigration | Scoop.it
Migration flows in both directions between the United States and Mexico have diminished according to recent statistics released by the Mexican and United States governments. Mexican immigration to the United States began to decline in the mid-2006, and that pattern has continued into 2010. The Pew Hispanic Center analysis of Mexican government data indicates that the number of Mexicans annually leaving Mexico for the U.S. declined from more than one million in 2006 to 404,000 in 2010. Rand Corporation also found that the Mexican immigrants returning to Mexico have not increased despite the crisis.
John Blount's insight:

Plaza, Sonia. "Are Fewer Mexicans Crossing the Border to the United States." Worldbank.org. N.p, 03 Aug. 2011. Web. 10 July 2014.

The blog above shows the decrease in border patrol apprehensions of illegal immigrants.  This is due to the of increased border patrol agents, stricter laws on the state level like the ones Arizona has implemented, and the greater risk of violence from drug cartels along the Mexican- US border.  The increase in agents in recent years has had a tremendous effect combating attempted crossings. Although some say that the decline in apprehensions is due to failure capturing these illegals, the number of captures and deportation has increase in the past four years.  This blog will continue to provide evidence to the solution for illegal immigration. The source provides information from the Department of Homeland Security producing an accurate and credible source.

Illegal Aliens Taking U.S. Jobs (2013)

Illegal Aliens Taking U.S. Jobs (2013) | Illegal immigration | Scoop.it
John Blount's insight:

"Illegal Aliens Taking U.S. Jobs (2013)." Fairus.org, Mar 2013. Web. 10 July 2014

In the article written by the Federation for American Immigration Reform also known as FAIR they discuss how illegal aliens are taking the jobs of the U.S. Citizens. FAIR believes that the work force is the main reason for most of illegal immigration today. In 1986 the United States enacted a law which prohibits hiring illegal aliens, but employers disobey it every day. According to the article the business owners are ignoring the law, or creating fake documentation for the illegal’s employment. Most of the workers are here from Mexico or Central American but according to FAIR many come from Canada as well. In 2010, the U.S. apprehended more than 6,000 illegal immigrants from the northern border country. Another group that tends to take up a portion of the illegal aliens are "overstayers," people who have come to the United States with Visas and stayed. They believe that this is one third to forty percent of the illegal alien total population. The article will provide evidence of how illegal immigration is crippling the job market for United States citizens.  Adding to the list of effects of illegal, this article will be utilized to exploit the illegal immigration problem to the audience.  The non-profit, bi-partisan organization backed by respectable political figures such as, former U.S. Senator and Immigration Committee Chairman Alan Simpson and former U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota makes FAIR a credible source.

McGraw Hill Reader: Issues Across the Disciplines

Munoz, Manuel. "Leave Your Name at the Border." The McGraw-Hill Reader: Issues Across the Disciplines. Ed. Gilbert H. Muller.  11th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 2011. 71-75. Print

John Blount's insight:

Manuel Munoz's essay describes the defamation of the Hispanic name.  He also describes the distinct assumption of the Hispanic name to the vilified illegal immigrant by American born citizens.  This assumption is due in part to the high number of illegal immigrants along the southern border and west coast.  Without the increase of agents in border security this prejudice will continue to poison out society.  The immigrants that abide by immigration laws are the ones suffering from this problem.  This essay will provide the reasons to post more agents along the borders to deter illegals from crossing into the United States and prevent the assumption by natural American citizens.  Stemming from the collection of essay from McGraw-Hill Reader, this source presents its credentials.

John Blount's insight:

The debate of increasing the amount of drones for Customs and Border Patrol has been circulated around both the House and Senate.  Yet the CBP has recommended the postponement of drone purchases, due to the inability to provide the manpower to operate and maintain these effective machine. Increasing the amount of manpower to patrol the border will produce lower numbers of illegal crossing attempts.  This image shows the solution to nationwide struggle on illegal immigration through increase manpower along the border.

Obama on border crisis: ‘This isn’t theater. This is a problem.’ | Washington Watch | McClatchy DC

Obama on border crisis: ‘This isn’t theater. This is a problem.’ | Washington Watch | McClatchy DC | Illegal immigration | Scoop.it
President Barack Obama called on Congress to approve his $3.7 billion request to address the growing number of unaccompanied children illegally crossing the southern border, but acknowledged that partisan politics are already hurting chances of the bill passing.
John Blount's insight:

Kumar, Anita. “Obama on Border Crisis: This Isn’t Theater. This is a Problem.” McClatchy Washington Bureau. McClatchy Washington Bureau, 10 July 2014, Web. 10 July 2014

In the newspaper article by Anita Kumar, she discusses recent actions and statements made by President Obama about the border crisis. The President is asking congress to "approve his $3.7 billion request to address the growing number of unaccompanied children illegally crossing the southern boarder." Obama believes that because of partisan politics his wish might not be granted. He doesn't understand why solving this problem doesn't take hierarchy over this issue. "On Tuesday, Obama asked Congress for emergency funding for additional Border Patrol agents and judges, more detention facilities, an increase in the prosecution of smuggling networks and a media campaign to discourage parents from sending their children to the United States." He met with Texas Governor Rick Perry, who hasn't seen eye to eye on things in the  past, but they both left understanding this this is huge problem and something needs to be done. Obama asked Perry to talk to Congress. The article discusses how Obama has been criticized because he hasn't visited the boarder as much as people who have liked. Jeh Johnson the secretary of Homeland Security is being sent again this week to evaluate the situation. Obama says he will continue to warn other countries not to send children because they will get sent back. Kumar states "The number of unaccompanied children traveling from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, most through the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, has surged despite an increase in deportations. About 52,000 minors traveling without their parents have been caught at the Southwest border since October". This article will advance the argument that, with congressional support, increased patrols on the border will  help decrease the overwhelming issue of illegal immigration.  The McClatchy Washington bureau  article is written by a white house correspondent with over ten years of experience reporting on various issues stemming from the white house. With its level playing field reporting, the McClatchy Washington bureau is a creditable source for this argument.

John Blount's insight:

Why is Your Healthcare so High? Effects of Illegal Immigration on Healthcare. Hoskins Dianne. Youtube. 31 Jan. 2014. Web. 08 July 2014.

In the video above Carol Plato, Director of Cooperate Business Services at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart, Florida, appeals to state lawmakers about the costs of healthcare treatment to illegal immigrants.  She gives several cases of the alarming expenses her hospital has incurred. Since the hospital cannot deny any one for health care, an illegal patient that received healthcare treatment for two years accrued 1.5 million dollars.  In this case, the hospital is still incurring cost because it forcefully sent the patient back to his country of Guatemala after not paying any of the medical expenses. The family is suing the hospital which has compiled a quarter of a million dollars in legal fees.  Plato provides another case of an illegal immigrant from Mexico that has severe brain damage that racked up another 1.5 million in healthcare treatment. In both cases, the hospital received no reimbursement.  This video will help show the problems that occur when treating illegal immigrants and the damage it does to the American’s healthcare cost.  Plato’s presentation to the state lawmakers is clear and detailing, utilizing statistics from accredited sources such as the Florida Hospital Association estimates that in 2007 there was 100 million dollars in expenses for healthcare treatment of illegal and undocumented patients.

Texas Prepares Border 'Surge' Here And Now Rick Perry has signed a plan to spend an extra $1.3 million each week for the rest of the year to bolster efforts to patrol his state's border with Mexico, as officials on the border report a spike in...
John Blount's insight:

Hobson, Jeremy. Interview with State Representative Johnathon Strickland and State Senator Jose Rodriguez. “Texas Prepares Border Surge.” National Public Radio. National Public Radio, 19 June 2014. Web. 10 July 2014.

In this audio interview, Texas state Representative Johnathon Strickland and Democratic state Senator Jose Rodriguez debate the decision by Texas Governor Rick Perry to spend an extra 1.3 million a week for the rest of the year to reinforce the US/Mexico border in his state.  The increasing number of illegal immigrants crossing into the state, most of them children, has become a national discussion in recent months. Representative Strickland believes the efforts to ramp patrols will discourage parents from sending their children on the dangerous trip and deter the criminal elements from utilizing these children crossing illegally into the United States.  Senator Rodriguez has more liberal approach.  He believes the best determent for illegal immigration is to invest in the economic development of countries like Central America and Mexico.  This debate will provide emphasis on the method of combating illegal immigration by refuting Senator Rodriguez’s method to deter the law defying immigrants.  The use of two political figures from opposing sides, provides credible sources to validate the argument against illegal immigration
