AURORA — City officials hope to create another heritage committee to represent the city’s Indian American population.
Nadia R. Kanhai's insight:

Well, this is a step in the right direction, considering Asians are the fastest growing "minority" in this country. I wonder why this is being "limited" to Indians when we could be inclusive enough to embrace Pan-Asian Americans.

The Long Road to Marriage Equality in Illinois (it didn't just happen last week)

The Long Road to Marriage Equality in Illinois (it didn't just happen last week) | Illinois Immigration Justice | Scoop.it
Nadia R. Kanhai's insight:

"The immigrant rights movement has a great slogan, "No human being is illegal," which recognizes that designating any person as "illegal" dehumanizes them, and opens them up as targets for all sorts of abuse and other discrimination.  Which is why the anti-immigrant bigots love so much calling the undocumented "illegal," and why anti-LGBT bigots have focused so much energy on preventing same-sex couples from getting a lousy piece of paper from their local government.  Some in our LGBT community still don't get that, but wasn't that the point of so much of the pettier aspects of segregation of the Old South, the segregated drinking fountains, lunch counters, etc.? -- it was to dehumanize African Americans, and make them vulnerable for far more serious physical violence and discrimination."

Despite insisting that comprehensive immigration reform was still a "priority," Republicans will not take-up the issue this year.
Nadia R. Kanhai's insight:

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas? Practice patience and prayer as our leaders "fix" the issue with deportation. This doesn't have to be a partisan issue, so why is it? Is there any explanation except race?

Thousands march, urge Congress to pass immigration reform (PHOTOS) | THE GATE Newspaper | Illinois Immigration Justice | Scoop.it
Nadia R. Kanhai's insight:

In general, the march was not what I expected and a bit of a letdown with its late start and offensive signs.

However, when I saw the immigrant restaurant workers step out the back door to watch us march by, the immigrant unloading the box truck along our route, and felt the immigrant power unleashed as we arrived downtown after being silenced for so long, I knew I had done the right thing by attending the march. It was not a wasted Saturday after all. The time for justice is long overdue.

But people, let's leave the hateful signs at home next time. I don't want to see signs that say "Roskam hates immigrants." That's not true. We need to be fair if we want to be treated fairly. Peter Roskam is a friend to select immigrants. He's been decent to me, even though we disagree on many justice issues. The sign that read "Roskam hates Asians," what was that about? That is just not true.

Let's win 'em over with a little honey.

Demographic Shifts in Illinois Legislative Districts | ICIRR

Nadia R. Kanhai's insight:

With so many Asian Americans, why are people so up-in-arms over the Latinos? Not that I want these people (those who feel threatened by Latinos) up in my face, and not to say they haven't been.

Looking at these numbers and the legislators they're associated with, I can say I've seen the changes in their attitudes over the years. Now I know why.

Yes, I vote. Yes, I've considered running for public office. Yes, I've worked on political campaigns. And, yes, I want justice and equal rights for immigrants.
