Few challenges facing state policymakers are more complex than dramatically reducing California's greenhouse gas emissions. But regulators will soon consider one of the more straightforward solutions: increasing the state's renewable energy mandate. Meeting California's long-term climate goals, experts say, will require a more nuanced approach than the so-called renewable portfolio standard, which currently requires utilities to buy 33 percent of their retail electricity from renewable sources by 2020. But in the short term, raising that standard could bolster the development of solar, wind and geothermal energy, all of which have faced financial or regulatory roadblocks in the desert.

The Midland County Board of Commissioners had the opportunity this week to receive unbiased information regarding wind turbines. At its regularly scheduled meeting, the board welcomed Sarah Mills, who presented the "Pros and Cons of Wind farms."

Funded by the C.S. Mott Foundation, Mills conducted a 2016 survey "on the public acceptance of wind turbines in the communities surrounding 10 of Michigan's utility-scale farms.

EAST PEORIA — Voters in Fondulac Township on Thursday approved a lease agreement with Chicago-based Trajectory Energy to bring 7,000 solar panels to Sunnyland. The vote to approve the solar energy project was 46-0.
